08:18 AM ET 12.27 | If the Pittsburgh is able to compete in 2012, it won't be by accident. One wave of young talent already has arrived on the shore of PNC Park, carrying everyday starters Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata. The next one remains offshore, but it's coming in hot, featuring the young talent of Starling Marte, Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, Josh Bell and several others. At some point, if all unfolds as planned, those waves will meet and create a promising lineup capable of ending the 19 consecutive sub-.500 seasons. ... "We're not really looking for that as a perfect storm of everything colliding and coming together," Pirates president Frank Coonelly said.

I haven't done my research yet - but are any of those 'next wave' guys Starting Pitchers?
Cause it's gonna be a long season with what they've got.

Small market teams like Pittsburgh and KC condition the fans and the press to be excited about reaching .500.

Being a fan of a small market I'd say it is unfortunate.

Which will happen first: the Pirates finishing above .500, or the Cubs winning a WS?

103>19. Pirates have a good chance to do it next year. Cards will be worse. Brewers will be worse. Cubs are the Cubs, they aren't close to being good. At least the Pirates have a lot of good young talent.

Jeff Locke has shown some promise. He's a lefty with a nice fastball. He's still a year away I think. His September callup numbers weren't Earth-shattering, but he's still young.

Keep counting / Cards worse? Wainwrights return must seal that. I was at PT's last nite and they seemed to have alot of young talents too but I don't think they'll win the NL Central either !
