Bryzgalov letting the Flyers down

08:26 AM ET 12.27 | Ilya Bryzgalov may be television gold for the HBO cameras, but his performance in the net is, at times, another story. [Bryzgalov] hasn't played up to expectations. His 14-7-3 record is misleading, based more on the offensive support he has received than his strong play. With star defenseman Chris Pronger sidelined for the rest of the season because of severe post-concussion syndrome, Bryzgalov needs to step up his game if the Flyers are going to be a serious Stanley Cup challenger. Bryzgalov, 31, has had some very good stretches, but he has been much too inconsistent for someone of his pedigree. Overall, he has a 2.92 goals-against average (34th in the NHL) and .895 save percentage (41st).

And he would probably be the first to agree with this. I think it says something about goalies who are on poor defensive teams. They don't always shine when they play with a good team. Still 14-7-3 isn't too shabby.

As a flyers fan, Bryz hasn't lived up to expectations, but I will judge him by how he does in the playoffs. I have watched the NHL long enough to know that how a team or goalie is playing in October, November, December or January means absolutely nothing compared to how they're playing in March/April when the playoffs begin. With 16 teams getting the playoffs, if Bryz gets hot in the last 15 games, thats all that matters to me. The regular season in the NHL and NBA are pretty much a big waste of time as long as you know your team is good enough to clinch a playoff spot.

And who is surprised by this? I've never watched much of the Western conference - a buddy of mine said you'll love him in the regular season. My feelings about him so far are far from love. And all I can think about as far as his playoff abilities is how he looked against Detroit last year. As bad as Philly's goalies were last year in the playoffs I felt good about the fact that we didn't have Bryz - never liked the idea of them signing him. The net minder issues in Philly never ends - aaaaaahhhhhhggggggg!

Those numbers (GAA and Sv %) are pretty weak. Not much better than the Monster (3.26, .898). To continue the comparison, the Monster is currently 9-6-0 as a comaprison to 14-7-3.
Flyer Nation can't be feeling to good about this right now.

He's letting my fantasy team down as well. I'm going to have to search the waiver wire for an over-achiever.

I agree with all of you here...watching Bryzgalov against the Rangers, he looked like he was always "unsure" which this olde goalie can tell you is a sure sign of trouble. Especially behind what is looking like a team with a rather suspect defence.
Again, it is only December....but as the great philospher L.P. Berra once noted...it's getting late early

Typical Philadelphia babble ....they haven't been happy with a goalie since Bernie Parent...(sans Pelle Lindburg)...

Yes...but The Monster has actually been improving...I wonder what Philly would trade up for him?

Ah...giver Bryz a few years to settle down and get used to the big contract...he'll be fine.

A Flyers goalie hasn't played up to expectations? I'm shocked, I tell you.... SHOCKED!!! Something like this hasn't happened in Philly since last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. And....

Nor has it happened in Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary or Washington just to name a few. As mentioned above, team defense has a lot to do with making a goalie look good. The Flyers record looks pretty good with all the injurys and so so goaltending eh?

The article made a good point which isn't in the condensed version here. The writer noted that Bryz's record and numbers against Western Conference opponents is better possibly due to familiarity with those teams. He suggested that as Bryz gets more experience with the tendencies of Eastern Conference teams, he will improve. I can't get too worked up by this in December especially since they are doing so well with all the off season changes. I'd like to see Holmgren trade for a solid defenseman but otherwise the Flyers are pretty solid.
