Skins job more daunting than Shanahan imagined

08:07 AM ET 12.27 | There is a bottom line in the NFL business, and it can be an unforgiving barometer. "You always look at the overall record to see if you get better," said Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan. ... Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Shanahan acknowledged for the first time that the task he faced in returning the Redskins to competitive form was bigger than he expected when he accepted the job -- and a lucrative five-year contract -- in January 2010. The Redskins haven't reached the playoffs since 2007 and getting back there is taking longer than many in the organization expected. "Oh, yeah, a lot longer than I first anticipated," Shanahan said.

Love the "Wet Rat" photo.

Try matching the play calling to your personnel. You load up on RBs but practically ignore the WR position and take two very marginal QBs, and then want to throw the ball continuously.

On offense, you need a legit QB, a big, physical WR to complement Santana and those TEs, and another body for the O-line. On defense, you need a corner and some general depth.

Not having John Elway (or Terrell Davis) around can have that effect.

He'll definitely get another year to turn the offense around. Start with new QBs (and more than two of them) and a new OC. If he can do that, then he'll likely be around for the 2013 season.

I don't see him firing Shanny Jr. Either way, a legit QB who can throw that often without aiming one at the wrong uniform will be the biggest improvement. You've got Moss with another year or two in the tank and good TE play. There are some young receivers who can develop into something with a good passer to throw to them. Still gotta have a legit #1 wideout, though.

Yup and I expect they will grab one of the top QBs in next years draft, be it Griffin or trading up for Luck, especially if St. Louis ends up with the top pick.

First pick will almost certainly be a QB, unless they see someone they like will still be there in the second round. In that case, grab a stud WR or CB first and then get your QB. That's risky, though.

"Hail to the Redskins!"!!

Time will tell. Dan Snyder is known for tossing coaches after only a short amount of time.

I like the way Dan Snyder operates. As young as he is just think of how many more years the Skins are going to suck. On behalf of the NFC East and Skins haters nation wide let me say......"Long live little Danny".

Weren't you on the next page chiming over how Jerry Jones runs his team as an owner?

I've never seen Snyder on the sidelines whispering plays to any coach.

So his guarantee of Rex Grossman and John Beck winning this season, didn't come to fruition?

Shocking.

December 27, 2011  10:26 AM ET

Well, the good news fro the Redskins is Fat Albert will only cost $3 million next year in dead cap space. Trent Williams costs them $13 million, whew!
Grossman becomes FA, but was only making a little less than $1 million this year. Beck will be the only QB under contract when the season ends.
Ya think they might try to move up in this draft????

Don't confuse my acceptance of JJ as an endorsement, merely resignation to the inevitable. In the end I'm glad JJ is much older than he looks. I'm also glad he's not Little Danny.
What I was trying to point out is don't try to tell me what kind of tires to put on my car, I own the MF and I'll put what I want on it, as would you.
