08:09 AM ET 12.27 | The fallout in San Diego, while reportedly ready to sweep out Norv Turner, may also have a domino effect leading to the return of Jon Gruden. [Chargers president Dean Spanos] is expected to reveal his decision on whether to keep [general manager A.J. Smith] by the middle of next week. ... [Should] Smith be fired in San Diego, he is expected to have opportunity elsewhere. People familiar with Rams owner Stan Kroenke's plans said Monday that Kroenke is waiting for Spanos to make a move on Smith. If Smith is available, league and agent sources strongly indicated that Smith will be hired as Rams' general manager and bring along Jon Gruden as head coach.

Re-treads always work out well. Always.

Gruden just signed a 5-year TV contract.

Strange, a lot of people think Smith is part of the problem.

December 27, 2011  08:45 AM ET

If you're gonna hire Smith you might as well bring back his close, personal friend, Marty Schottenheimer. They get along so well ...

I'm sure there is some out so he can return to coaching if he were to choose. Anyways we all see how much contracts are worth in the sports business anyways.

It's a shame, isn't it? I'd love to see him out of the booth, whether he coaches or not.

Excellent!

Gruden fires McDaniels who then gets hired by Kansas City so that he can recreate his special magic with the QB he's wanted all along, Matt Cassel! The Missouri and Kansas hostilities start all over again as both sides blame the other for their continued misfortunes.

December 27, 2011  09:47 AM ET

How many years have we heard about Gruden's return to coaching? Sheesh!

December 27, 2011  09:50 AM ET

A.J. Smith, the guy that cost the Chargers a playoff berth last year because he didn't need Vincent Jackson.

If this is in any way serious, Rams fans should demand a change in ownership not front office and coaching.

December 27, 2011  10:03 AM ET

Gruden will be the worst coaching hire since Shanahan in Washington.

December 27, 2011  10:07 AM ET

Who cares. Bring these 2 in and the Rams won't get any better. I will be glad to get him off MNF though.

December 27, 2011  10:09 AM ET

Eagles fans must be hoping this article is all true. Spags to the Eagles as the DC? Maybe, that is the game changer in all of it.

December 27, 2011  10:10 AM ET

Brng these 2 in and the Rams will only get worse but it does get NUMBNUTS out of the booth on Monday nights.

What did Rams fans do to deserve this?

If this gets Gruden off of MNF, I'm all for it.
