Notre Dame loses commitment

So much for the allegedly titanium-solid Notre Dame recruiting class. The Irish suffered their first setback Tuesday when, as suspected, defensive tackle Omar Hunter of Buford, Ga., announced that he was backing off his commitment and taking a look elsewhere. Hunter and his high school coach had been hinting about a change of heart for some time, so this comes as no surprise to those who monitor the Irish's recruiting fortunes. And while Hunter was indeed one of the premier talents in this recruiting class -- Rivals.com ranks him the No. 53 prospect overall nationally and he surely could have helped along the defensive line.

Come to 'SC! We can use someone of your talents.

Me thinks this is ONLY the start of this

January 4, 2008  08:52 AM ET

He said distance was a factor, so I can't go to USC since it is farther. Unless, maybe he lied and used distance as a factor when it wasn't. Don't worry SC fan, he is going to Florida. Urban has been all over him for the last month or so.

January 4, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Urban's been all over him for a month? Hmmm...Interesting. This has been a recruiting "dead period" hasn't it?

Urban committing a recruiting violation? Gee, imagine that...

That POS will get his in time...

Agree with THE TRUTH.

January 4, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Disagree, Truth. OH was refered to by the rest of the class as a "loose end".

The other guys call themselves a family and are shocked that they even lost this one.

And, CPA, apparently the USC refered to is South Carolina. It is moot, though, as he is rumored to have committed to UF during the "dead period" and was asked to keep up the ND charade until signing day.

He tried unsuccessfully to keep it on the down-low. CW got wind of it, called him on it, and the rest is history...

what good does it do to commit anymore?
I was always taught if you make a commitment to something you follow through, but such is today's pre-madonna, celeb wannabe high school athlete.
And one more time for the record if a kid commits then backs out, did you really want someone with that character on your team anyway?

January 4, 2008  11:40 AM ET

xxx84xxx-I agree with you. For the terrible year ND had, for there to be one decommitment, that's great. It shows that there are real players who stick with their committment.

In college football, there needs to be an early signing period like there is in basketball. That would make commitments worth something. If you wanted to leave, the only reason would be a head coaching change.

This is a tough loss for the Irish. Kid wants to stay close to home, and I can't blame him. Hopefully Spurrier lands him for South Carolina.

Thread's over, XXX wins.

January 4, 2008  02:47 PM ET

XXX....once the coaches stop acting like pre-madonna, money grubbing, celeb wannabe's, maybe the students will too.

January 4, 2008  03:04 PM ET

He's committed to Florida. He wants the honor of playing under Urban Liar.

January 4, 2008  04:01 PM ET

You just mad that you're stuck with Charlie Weis, IrishR. Just mad.

January 4, 2008  04:44 PM ET

Notre Dame you guys messed up when you hired a man who looks like that marshmellow off of Ghost busters. Bye Bye Notre Dame. Hire Lou Holtz

January 4, 2008  04:46 PM ET

I agree with Truth.
This is e pluribus unum, I'd wager.

January 4, 2008  05:06 PM ET

Hope Saban goes after him... Alabama is recruiting well but there is always room for someone of his talent.

My guess though is S. Carolina or Florida..

January 4, 2008  05:41 PM ET

If he's wanting to stay close to home, he'd never have committed to ND. For top recruits, it's about winning. Not just a good program like ND, or South Carolina. It's about a championship program like USC, LSU, or Florida. Look for the news of one of the top 10 schools acquiring him. Go Trojans!

January 4, 2008  06:34 PM ET

faustus, you are correct with that follow up...

January 4, 2008  07:00 PM ET

EJ, thanks for pointing out the truth... this happens to every program by either transfers or decommitment but now that it happened to the Irish and that he is looking at Florida suddenly the kid sucks and Urban also... but don't get mad Irish fans (or others) because you would accept a good player regardless of his past commitment.
