Bryzgalov losing grip on Winter Classic start

08:33 AM ET 12.28 | Apart from his work on HBO, things seem to be going from bad to worse for Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov lost his fourth straight on Tuesday and was the main reason the Flyers dropped a 5-1 decision to Tampa Bay. When reporters asked him about his performance, Bryzgalov was at first sarcastic, saying he was OUTSTANDING. Then he bashed himself and used an f-bomb on live TV when talking about his play, saying, in effect, he let the team down and has to be better. ... The hunch here is they go with second-year goalie Sergei Bobrovsky -- who has been more consistent than Bryzgalov -- on Thursday in Pittsburgh. If Bobrovsky plays well, who do you start in the Winter Classic? Start debating, folks.

Please....every coach goes with the "hot hand" in goal....be it the starter or the backup. More like a lazy reporter taking the ever popular "Philly Goalie Problem" story and recycling it like FN with that picture of Sid fighting....

Bryzgalov is way overated and simply does not rate the mega contract the Flyers gave him. If the NHL had non-guaranteed contracts like the NFL teams could simply jettison contracts like this. But, alas, the Flyers will have Bryzgalov's less than stellar play and his huge contract hanging around there neck for years to come. Start Bobrovsky in the Winter Classic. He's the future for the Flyers in goal and is a better goalie than Bryzgalov.

Bryz hasn't looked real good lately, but it certainly isn't Bryz's fault we only put up one goal. If he could take a couple of those goals back we lose 2 or 3 to 1 instead of 5-1.

The only thing I can say about Bryz is at least he is not making excuses. The first goal was pretty bad, but there were a couple in there that the defense completely let down.

Don't worry Flyer fans, they play the Pens next. That means they'll be on top of their game and either Bobky or Bryz will be a brick wall.

No, I dont agree with the overrated part. It will take time to settle in and he there will be up and down times but he is (at the moment) a better goalie that Bob. With better D he might have had a easier time settling in and getting his confidence rolling but the Flyers got the best guy IMO.

As for being overpaid, yeah. That has more to do with the Flyers lack of wanting to go after Thomas at $5 million a year when they thought they could get him, or another goalie, for cheaper. They paid for it that season with sad goal tending, then paid for it again when Bryzgalov and everyone knew how desperate they needed a top goalie.

Vokoun and Neuvirth are available.............cheap. You could get both of them, Happy Meals for Life, a new car and season tix to the Phillies for about 2 paychecks from Bryz!

Ups and downs. That's just the way it goes.. I think I could have beaten the Flyers last night if I were in goal. Flyers tripled up on shots, but they were all into the lightening logo. Flyers have two good goalies, whom ever is hot will play... just like every other team!

Pretty sure the 1st goal was redirected by a Flyer. Those are tough when you are already set. There were some other softies though.

The only way i can explain his drop off would be due to the difference in systems between Phoenix and Philly. Maybe the bulk of his shots are coming from different areas and he hasn't made the adjustment yet. Regardless, by now he's had enought ime to make an adjustment and i'm not going to make anymore excuses for him. On the other side of the coin, i'm not going to write him off after half a season either.

You dropped a bomb on me.

Aren't they going to be playing the game with hip waders on?

I'm not sure I agree. When you give up a couple of bad goals early it can demoralize a team. I never thought he was a top notch goalie but I did think he was solid and he seems to be clueless out there right now. Some of it is the defense but a lot of it is simply soft goals. They're going to have a tough time with the Bruins, Rangers and Pens with such an imbalance in net

Excellent logic.

Actually when you are paying a guy multi millions more then you have to go with him or you might as well just go kick your GM in the Apple bags

I've been trying to do that ever since Sather signed Wade Redden but the damn security guards at the Garden won't let me into his office.

The ever popular goalie problem exists in Philly that is why it is talked about. Last time they made it to the Finals who was between the pipes.... A washed up Ron Hextall and the legendary Garth Snow. I'll never forget both of them had sub .900 save percentages in the playoffs, YIKES and gave up 16 goals in a 4 game Finals sweep

"Last time they made it to the finals" was in 2008 with Michael Leighton, genius.
