Does Cam Newton deserve an apology?

08:02 AM ET 12.28 | Cam Newton suffered some harsh personal assessments in the run-up to the 2011 NFL draft. Fake smile. Selfish. The next JaMarcus Russell. The slighting of Cam Newton going into the N.F.L. draft last April was anything but slight. ... But the Panthers say Newton's work habits, which were questioned before the draft, help explain why he has put up such impressive statistics. Despite missing off-season training and minicamps because of the lockout, Newton has spent countless hours in film sessions preparing for each game, coaches and teammates say. [Said Derek Anderson:] "I think the whole entire thing stems from his want-to and his ability to work and study."

He gets the last laugh, and ROY honors. I think he'll be good with that.

Even Russel lasted longer than one season. The Ryan Leaf of the NFC (Young) is still hanging around.

Does he deserve an apology? From who? He was drafted #1 overall, he has absolutely nothing to complain about. He has proved the doubters wrong at this early juncture... Now he just needs to progress and extend that over a career.

Sports reporters are athlete hating, self important pompous failed athletes (themselves). They won't ever apologize. If you EVER get something related to an apology it'll either be backhanded, or they'll say something like: "Our criticism is what drove xxx to work hard to prove everyone wrong!". Look at how they run down athletes and then get mad when they lose their access. Their sense of self entitlement is astounding.

The pointless issue of an apology is merely due to race. I have yet to hear Newton ask for one personally

He's keeping his mouth shut and letting his performance on the field do all of his talking for him.
Well done, Mr. Newton. Well done indeed.

They are still 6-9, and going to be 6-10 after they lose to New Orleans. Exactly how does that make people have to take anything back?
