08:35 AM ET 12.28 | The patchwork quilt that is the Panthers, down seven forwards Tuesday night, authored a win over visiting Toronto. "This was a big win for us," Michal Repik said. ... The Panthers could get some help soon as the Christmas roster freeze is lifted on Wednesday. Florida is said to have interest in free agent center John Madden -- a three-time Stanley Cup champion with New Jersey (twice) and Chicago. Madden, 38, scored 12 goals for the Wild last season. "We're talking to everyone, and we're listening to everyone," general manager Dale Tallon said during Tuesday's game. "We really need some bodies. We're trying to get better and will do so anyway we can."

interesting, but at 38 is he still worth it? I haven't seen him play since he was with the Devils...any one have any idea what Madden's still brings to the table?

Welp, he brings a veteran presence and a champions' experience. He was never known for his goal scoring or play making, but you can't ever really go wrong picking up an intelligent defensive forward grinder type. His age though will probably be a factor, but don't tell Mark Recchi i said that.

I recall he was always a pain in the arse killing penalties...but does he still have the speed to be that threat? But if he provides a temporary fill in as we've got like 7 regulars currently out injured...a short term hiring would make sense. This season is really more about turning things around and getting things set for next year when Huberdeau should hopefully be making the team and perhaps Howden...I don't see Madden being a long term signing, if it happens at all...

I don't know about at the table...but I hear he gets MAD being disturbed in the JOHN afterwards.

In an offensive minded scheme, he'd be an asset for sure. What you give up for him is the question!

*sigh* Now we're getting threads on former Wild players..

So long as Madden doesn't become the new Forsberg, Sundin or Chelios, I don't mind that much.

Remember Mark Recchi? He did good for the Bruins last year. And he was 42! Madden can provide experience and stability. Worth giving him a try, I think. What do they have to lose?

It never hurts to have an accomplished veteran on your team, especially if you're short on able bodies.

He has always been good in the FO circle...

I think Weiss is still our #1 center and Shawn Matthias has emerged as our #2 center. I'd sign Madden to center the third line, but only a 1-year deal, at league minimum salary. He'll have a chance to play for a contender so I don't think salary should be an issue to him. Can you believe I said Panthers and contender in the same sentence? This is a great season!
