08:07 AM ET 12.29 | The tension of a bitterly disappointing season was fully exposed Wednesday in Chicago. Instead of saying he would wait until the end of the season to address the future of his coaching staff, Lovie Smith snapped Wednesday when asked if Mike Martz will be back next year. Smith's uncharacteristic reply gave a glimpse into how strained things have become in recent weeks as Martz has been forced to address his name being linked to college openings and then a report that he will not return in 2012. "What kind of question is that anyway, at this time?" Smith said. "What kind of question is that? Why would you ask a question like that anyway?"

Nothing like getting exposed in the cold of Chicago!

Not much love from Lovie... Pretty easy question IMO.

At least he showed movement!!!

One day it will be Lovie who is finally on his final legs, but why would anyone ask that question either?

"Rex Grossman is our QB ... wait, I mean, Mike Martz is our offensive coordinator ... I mean ... oh, hell, I give up!"

did he need metamucil for that?

I'm surprised that Lovie's surprised. Martz has been a hot topic all month in the Windy City.

Da Bears have trouble brewing in the windy city.

Mmm...maybe because it's his job to do so.

Asking a sportswriter why he asks stupid questions is like asking a lawyer why he's scum. Dat's just the way it is.

Martz should be back...Bears were right in the thick of things until Cutler went down...maybe if Lovie gave Martz a capable backup QB they wouldn't have lost what 5 in a row...Lovie better watch his **** or Martz might be the new HC of the CB's...

Everyone Loves Lovi!!! Look out Next Year!!!

All this tension over Lovie masks the fact that Angelo should be fired immediately.

Yes. Hopefully the rumor that Angelo will step down comes to fruition.

Of course, with my luck, Ted Phillips would hire A.J. Smith as soon as the Chargers fire his arse.

Rumor has it that A.J. would be going to St. Louis with Gruden as his head coach.
