Red Sox have eyes for a starter

08:23 AM ET 12.29 | By trading for Andrew Bailey, Boston has added depth and made a few things clear about the makeup of its pitching staff. The acquisition of Bailey furthers cements the team's plan to shift Daniel Bard from the bullpen to the rotation. "Bard is going to prepare for spring training as a starter, and we want to give him every chance to do that," said [Ben Cherington]. "We just need to see how things go in spring training. We believe he can do it." The likelihood of Bard starting probably means the Sox will keep Alfredo Aceves in the bullpen. Using two converted relievers in the rotation would a difficult proposition. Cherington said the team remains interested in obtaining another starter.

I really like the Andrew Bailey trade. The 3 players the Sox gave up are probably not going to be superstars. Redick will now be able to play every day which will be good for his development.

Joe Saunders seems to be the pitcher that Cherington has been targeting. I guess it's all going to come down to the money as the Red Sox attempt to stay below the luxury tax threshold.

I can't wait to here about Bards pitch count as they "extend" him.

They covet Garza but will probably sign Oswalt for 1 year as a reclamation project.

i dont like that they had to give up alcantara. i know hes young and has only played in the low a systems so far, but from what i have read he has some good stuff. i just hope they dont regret having to give him up in that trade. that along with bogarts coming along and looking like a possible force in the next couple of years i dont see why they couldnt have included middlebrooks and a few others to try and get gio from them along with bailey

i dont like that they traded alcantara. from what ive read he has the raw stuff to be a good pitcher in the future. and if they traded this package for bailey why not trade middlebrooks and a few others to get bailey and gio. bogarts sounds like a future stud to take over 3rd when youk leaves

Papelbon got to cash in, and good for him. Meanwhile the $50 mil a year he would have cost will buy a lot of good players over the next 4 years. I truly believe Boston got Pap's best years. However they won their first World Series in 86 years with Keith Foulke as their closer. He got the job done with an 87-89 mph fastball and a decent changeup.

Bailey has known injury issues, but finished strong last year. He's as good as any interesting prospect out there. If you sign 2 or 3 players like him (Boston now has two without even touching Bard), you're probably going to get lucky with one of them.

Remember that Aceves was damaged goods as well. Even broke his collar bone in the offseason. But that worked out OK for Boston.

@StupidMoron - I read more about Bailey's health issues. Sounds like he is one of the bargain players that Cherington is taking a chance on. We shall see...

December 29, 2011  02:35 PM ET

What Cherington is saying is they are going to throw stuff against the wall and hope something sticks. That is the plan.

What do you think of trying to trade Beckett for some younger pitching?
He's a surly SOB who is already acting out with Valentine, and is a bad influence on Lester and Bucholtz. plus his best years may be behind him.
