08:08 AM ET 12.30 | When Emmitt Smith talks Cowboys, people are bound to listen. [Smith] still bleeds Cowboys silver and blue, but the NFL's all-time leading rusher is not sure his former team is mentally tough enough to go to MetLife Stadium on Sunday to beat the New York Giants in a game to decide the NFC East champion. "Talent-wise, I think they have it," Smith said in an ESPN interview. "Leadership-wise, they have some good leaders on the ballclub. Do they have enough? Probably not. Can they go up to New York and be mentally tough in this situation? I think Jason (Garrett) has done a very good job of preparing the guys to be physically and hopefully mentally tough, but I think mental toughness is the thing needed in games like this."

Well why you have poor coaching that usually leads to an undisciplined team with little leadership....

December 30, 2011  08:14 AM ET

With a few exceptions there is nothing mentally tough on the defensive side of the ball.

Cowboys-Giants will be an interesting match-up. It isn't every day you see a game neither team wants to win.

He's throwing down the gauntlet hoping that his former team can rise to the occasion on Sunday. Good luck with that.

Emmitt, unfortunately you are correct. Why should they put any effort towards greatness when they are all paid like they have won Super Bowls? Many of these guys have big contract that Jerry gave them a few years back and that is where the problems are. Case in point...he just gave Gerald S. a multi-year deal. Why? For what? Miles Austin + fat contract = hurt half the season and no production the other half. Felix, Jenkings, Free, NEWMAN, Spencer - all underachievers.

Hasn't changed around here since Emmett's infamous "we had some diamonds" proclamation.

It is what it is...

Mental toughness my ***. The problem is that fat homeless dude coaching the defense, and the glaring lack of corners.
