Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium?

08:25 AM ET 01.02 | Among the candidates to host the next Winter Classic is the New York metro. The N.H.L. has looked at Citi Field, MetLife Stadium, the Yale Bowl and West Point as possible sites, Collins said before the Flyers-Rangers alumni game at Citizens Bank Park Saturday afternoon. "There are a lot of really great venues in the New York area," Collins said. "Yankee Stadium is obviously a special place, but we can't get in there for the next couple of years" because of college bowl game commitments. ... Collins suggested that a game on the West Coast was unlikely. "We have a window at 1 o'clock on New Year's Day, so that limits your ability to go west," he said.

Yankee Stadium would be a cool place for the game. Sadly, Toronto doesn't have an appropriate venue (an outdoor stadium with room for more than 50,000) - the SkyDome/Rogers Centre, won't work...of course, we'd need an NHL caliber team to host the game and that's not happening any time soon.

I can't really say I get too excited about these outdoor games anymore. the idea is really cool at first glance, but then you see that they are playing them in venues that offer crappy seating that is too far away from the action. Throw in the uncertainty of the weather in the locations they keep choosing and the whole scenario just leaves me feeling blah.
Now if they would spend the time and money to temporarily modify a facility to have the seating right around the rink like it's supposed to be and choose locations that have a great chance of having appropriate weather I'd be "all in".

It would have been nice if they did it at the old Stadium but at the time having the game in January would have set back the demolition plans so it wasn't feasable. I don't see the draw having it at one of the newer stadiums but the Yale Bowl sounds intrieging.

Is it possible to have a game on the Rideau Canal? That would be cool.

I agree with your point. But I really think that an original six game with the Canadiens playing would be a winner. Montreal-Detroit or NYR.
