08:42 AM ET 01.03 | Platoons aren't generally accepted practice in an NHL crease, but it seems to be working in Colorado. In December, the Avs' goaltenders -- Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere -- each played eight games. Giguere played Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks. Varlamov was between the pipes Monday night against the Kings at the Staples Center. So do the Avs have a "No. 1" goalie? Or are both equal? Giguere still calls himself the backup. Varlamov doesn't like to give himself any label. "I play when Coach tells me to play," he said. "Otherwise, I sit and try to learn from Jiggy." Coach Joe Sacco calls the goaltending situation "an ongoing thing" but has consistently referred to Varlamov as the Avs' goalie of the future.
