Tortorella questions officiating, NHL after win

08:48 AM ET 01.03 | John Tortorella said Monday he was fine seeing the HBO cameras go, and he may be waving goodbye to the Winter Classic, too. The Rangers should savor their 3-2 win over the Flyers in Monday's Winter Classic, because it's tough to imagine the NHL will ever invite them back. [Tortorella] called the third-period officiating "disgusting" and suggested that the league and NBC, which televised the game nationally, had conspired in an attempt to send the game into overtime. "I'm not sure if NBC got together with the refs and wanted to turn this into an overtime game," Tortorella said at the podium in the basement of Citizens Bank Park. "I'm not sure if they had meetings about that or what."

John, your defensemen smothered the puck with his glove while in the crease. It was the correct call.

Gotta agree with Torts. The officiating in the third was ridiculous. They all but tried to even the score for Flyers. There was no DEFINITIVE proof he covered the puck with his hand. Looked more like his hip. Regardless, don't complain about the calls or non-calls. Play the game...that's what I have always said.

One of the best Winter Classics. Loved Rupp came through for the Rangers. Always liked him and miss him on the Pens.

It's also a call I haven't seen made in more time than I can remember.
And the call on Callahan was more than a little dubious. It was bad enough when he was called for a dive, but then they changed it to holding the stick? Even the NYR haters out there have to admit, Callahan is not the type to "embellish".
There were also other in fractions that were missed, especially late in the game. It's a shame that something meant to be a showcase for the league got to the point it did.

Longtime Flyers fan here, but I sort of agree with Tortorella. When Timmonen took down the Ranger, and they both got called off (The Ranger for diving) was a joke. The guy was about to shoot for an open net, Timmonen clearly took him down so he couldn't score the empty netter. The defensemen smothering the puck in the crease was the right call.

Anyway, I still say they should use the Winter Classic every year for the All-Star game so the casual fan can see all the great players together at once so the NHL can actually market some of these guys. I can't tell you how many of my friends (who never watch the Flyers) wanted to watch this game this weekend simply because it was an event and they wanted to be a part of it.

By the way, not to egg on my friends in The City of Brotherly Love...but booing "Oh Canada" was classless (in the beginning of the song). I apologise to all Canadians on behalf of those morons

Very classy of the Phiily Fans (a few) to boo the Canadian National Anthem. Adds to the legacy

I klove this idea, and have been saying the same thing for awhile (in my quest to replace Bettman) Make it a week long event...all outdoors.
Alumni Game
(or, 3 orig 6 matchups during the week)
rookie Game
Skills Comp
All-Star Game

Spinny thing got me on that one.

Was surprised NBC didn't address or apologize. Maybe I missed it

Well...

Just a head's up Spiny, they claim that Giroux was on the Jumbotron at the moment, and they were yelling: "Roo!" Not sure, but that's what people are claiming. Bad timing? Sure. **** during the anthems, that's what I say...or don't play them at all. Seems like there is always controversy!

The officiating did stink. And that's unusual because................?

January 3, 2012  09:24 AM ET

The one thing that Bettman has to understand is that our beloved sport will always be a niche sport, and I am happy with that. I don't go as crazy about the Winter Classic as others, because I hate whenver sports try to appeal to the casual fan. I hate that the NFL has gotten so popular because there are so many commercials during these games, there is no flow to them and they are approaching 3 1/2 hours most of the time. Hockey is great with 3 commericals breaks per period, and the games are done within 2 1/2 hours. The more a sport tries to appeal to the casual fan, the more stuff you see like yesterday where it looks like the refs were trying to fix the game so the 'casual fan' could possibly see some dumb shootout that most diehard hockey fans hate.

I agree with most of this, though "niche" may not be the right word. It's certainly not a "niche" sport in Minnesota, Mass., and of course , Canada. But I agree about the "casual fan" stuff. Maddening

I guess 'niche' was the wrong word, as it is more of a regional sport. Here in Philly, it is just as popular as MLB, NBA and NFL.

Here's the thing with that...yes, it was kind of funny. Rupp hasn't made it a secret, he's got no love for Jags, but it was a tad disrespectful. Jags...like him or hate him for his attitude or past behavior is a great player...no doubt.

But Rupp is who he is, never apologized for it.
