08:49 AM ET 01.03 | Perhaps, if the Canadiens hadn't struggled so mightily under Randy Cunneyworth, Pierre Gauthier wouldn't have to make such apologies. [Gauthier] took the rare step of apologizing to anyone who was offended when the team hired a unilingual English-speaking head coach last month. There was an uproar in Quebec's chattering classes when the storied team named [Cunneyworth] as the interim head coach after Jacques Martin was fired on Dec. 17. Cunneyworth, who was brought in as an assistant coach at the beginning of the season, doesn't speak French. "I'm sorry if we upset people. Because that certainly wasn't our intention," Gauthier said at a news conference Monday.

Pardonnez moi.

Give me a break...please.

Much adieu about not much.

Make. It. Stop.

January 3, 2012  09:19 AM ET

Really??? Geez, is it that important to the press in Montreal to have a French speaking coach?

I have relatives all over La Belle Province and I've never heard any of them say a word about the Montreal coach needing to be a French Canadian. They just want a good team and the chance to win a title.

I'm curious, do the fans in Toronto insist that the Maple Leafs coach end all of his sentences with "eh?" and call everybody "hoser"?

Probably a question better suited to Western hockey fans..?

Good advice, but too late HC.

The Habs have the third worst record in the Eastern Conference, but they don't care, they want someone who speaks French! Are they that insecure up there about their language?

obviously

On a side note, what's up with PK having the balls to drop his gloves with a teammate but not against an opponent?

January 3, 2012  10:14 AM ET

those fans that are in an uproar, haven't a clue about how hockey works. Cunneyworth isn't the only problem in Montreal, the culture of losing is the biggest issue.

January 3, 2012  10:15 AM ET

Pierre should be apologizing for a lot of the moves he has made when it comes to player personnell, not this.

Really. What gets me is that they wonder why they're despised outside of La Belle Province.

It was only Tomas Plekanec. I'm sure the fight was over before either of those two Nancys was able to scratch the other too badly.

As someone once said, "Go West, young man, and grow up with the country."
