Winds of change leave Lovie in limbo

08:03 AM ET 01.04 | A new GM, whomever that may be, will likely have his own ideas on who is best suited to running the Bears. Welcome to limbo, Lovie Smith. The Bears' statement announcing the stunning news that the team had fired Jerry Angelo included the information that Smith will remain the team's head coach in 2012. If Smith wonders how awkward that might feel he always can call Dick Jauron, whom Angelo inherited in 2001. To make a determination on Smith's future before hiring a general manager whose job it should be to choose his own coach seems a tad premature and presumptuous but, hey, this isn't a day to second-guess the Bears. This is a day to applaud them.

Can the McCaskey's do anything right - Mellman?

January 4, 2012  08:09 AM ET

They have 1 more year to contend... then, back to the drawing board

More times than not, no.

Google Dave McGinniss, and read about his "hiring" by Mike McCaskey in 1999.

The best thing the McCaskey family did was strip Mike of role as team president.

I agree. They better hit the ball out of the park when they pick the new OC (as well as the GM). My gut tells me that Lovie goes with Mike Tice, since Tice is already on the staff. I hope I'm wrong.

Is the missing photo of Lovie in this T&R an omen?

Poor Bears, they might have to fold.

Damn... all that history.

It's somewhat appropriate... at times it seems like Lovie can go missing when he's standing right on the sidelines.

Jerry can't afford to fold... you can only put so many tractor pulls and George Strait concerts in that new barn.

BTW - my tirade will be "Fix the Defense" until it is done.

It's time for some sweeping changes there in Chicago.

The Wayward Wind, start Paying your players!!!

January 4, 2012  09:00 AM ET

PLEASE don't hire Bill Polian and his son! Bill has had "Angelo Drafts" since 2003.

Everytime I see his name in print I have Gilligan's Island flashbacks.
