08:20 AM ET 01.04 | For starters, Yu Darvish has acquainted himself with Dallas, reportedly visiting with his father. General manager Jon Daniels confirmed that Darvish is in town after news of a visit surfaced overnight in the Japanese media. Daniels declined to discuss the details of Darvish's trip, but he isn't expected to be in town much longer. Darvish is planning to start his preseason workouts this week in Japan. Daniels also declined to discuss the state of the contract negotiations, but a source suggested there's still work to do. "He isn't [there] for a press conference," the baseball source said. ... The two sides have until the afternoon of Jan. 18 to reach a deal.

Arlington gets no respect.

If Darvis waits a year he'll be a FA, without a posting fee, and can pick and choose where he wants to play.

Not to worry. The Mariners will hang on to him till he has to make it round the bases with a walker. Then they'll bring him back for one more season, just for old time's sake.

How will he be a free agent next year?

January 4, 2012  11:22 AM ET

Way over priced.

His contract to his team in Japan will end.

But in Japan you need 9 full years of service before you can become a true free agent. If he could have been free in 2013, then I'm sure he would have waited one more year.

both sides have plenty time to get any agreement on the table, for darvish would be tough to pitch in texas but he shouldn't have hard time to overcome any changes!!

I think he signs...There may be no better place to learn to be a MLB pitcher with Ryan and Maddox in Texas...minus the whole hitters park thing...
