Ball made the wrong decision

08:18 AM ET 01.06 | Montee Ball's Thursday announcement that he'd return to Wisconsin renewed the debate -- to stay or go -- that comes with a few Badgers case studies in Ron Dayne and John Clay. Yes, it's possible that [Ball's] draft stock will improve after staying at Wisconsin for another season, but that doesn't mean staying in school will help him have a longer, more successful pro career. In fact, it could seriously hinder his chances. ... [Given] the history of some of Wisconsin's greatest running backs, it's pretty clear that if Ball is hoping to have a long and successful pro career, he should make the move sooner rather than later. Playing football is not a profession with a long shelf-life, especially for running backs.

Yep on both.

The loss of Broyles exposed him some but I don't know that he will improve his draft position with another season. Of course, if RG3 had stayed/stays he might have left.

I think the last few games w/o Broyles might have made some NFL guys wonder a bit.

If he can come back one more year, put up the numbers he has in the past minus a Broyles, might change some minds into thinking he is a better QB.

BTW...what I read about the rumors at OU was basically the coaches getting rid of a bunch of players who weren't dedicated...bunch from Lewis' recruiting class....

the shelf life of an rb is so short i would want to get in the league asap.

True, but that NFL shelf life starts when they get into the NFL

One more year of getting banged around in college ball shortens that shelf life though.

QUOTE(#5):

The article is pointless. Staying your senior season is not the determining factor in NFL success.Ron Dayne was "too big" to have a long pro career. Prototypical NFL backs are built like Curtis Martin. Compact and durable. Dayne was was big target, which means he will absorb alot of contact and be more prone to injuries.Other examples of durable backs:Tiki BarberEmmitt SmithLadamian TomlinsonMarshall FaulkBig backs with short careers:Marion ButtsBo JacksonTryone WheatleyChristian Okoye

the discussion on this generally centers around draft postiion and guaranteed dollars moreso then long career.

Buckeyeboy9 and HarleyMarlboro, I put a message up for you guys on the LUS pickem thread. All in fun too.

Where is buckeyegirl9? She's been pretty quiet since the Michigan game, sanctions came down and osu posted that losing record. I guess I can see why. The other osu slappies also crawled back under their rocks too.

understandable because broyles was that good. someone who takes a flyer on him will get a good slot guy.

No idea whats going on in Norman but a bunch of guys are bailing. Still rumors about coaches possibly leaving but sounds like Norvell will be back. I think its a lot of blow back from the unfulfilled expectations of the season. Happened to us last year and carried on some into this year. They are purging guys left and right which is why our class could hit 30. Thats never happened under Mack.

did he make the wrong choice? Maybe, but he has a monster year wins the heisman and gets drafted number 1 or 2 could be a big payday instead of a middle to late 1st round pick this year

Will a RB ever be drafted in the top 5 anymore?

Seems NFL has determined that even the best RB's aren't worth that high of a pick.

I'd say T. Richardson will crack it this year

January 6, 2012  12:46 PM ET

Ball and Jones should have both gone. Ball should have capitalized on the season he had.

January 6, 2012  12:55 PM ET

MAYBE, Ball just wants to enjoy one more year of college life.

Bet he goes 6th to 8th. Top 5 will be all DL/OL/QB.
