Why Chargers kept Norv

09:43 AM ET 01.08 | Before deciding to keep A.J. Smith and Norv Turner, Chargers owner Dean Spanos did a lot of research and kicked a lot of tires around the league. He decided to maintain the status quo for a variety of reasons. The Chargers believe they have one more good year left with their core group of players. It made sense, in terms of maximizing opportunity, to keep that core group with the general manager and coach who have a vested interest in them. This also is a big year for the Chargers in their stadium quest, and Spanos wants to be able to focus on that as much as need be.

Actually, keeping Norv makes more sense than keeping AJ Smith.

Maybe the players want Norv. Maybe they want someone to blame again next year, like Dr. B-f-G says. Maybe they believe the late-season surge promises bigger things next year. MAYBE it's the OWNERS who have to go in San Diego.

I wonder if this doesn't have something to do with the amount of money that would be owed if they fired him and he still had time left on his contract.

It never stops colleges from firing right after contract extensions...It sure wouldn't stop anybody in the NFL....
