11:11 AM ET 01.08 | It is worth mentioning that two quarterbacks who made Browns GM Mike Holmgren's head coaching career -- Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck. Both were backups obtained by trades and given a chance to start. So it is worth paying attention to Green Bay's Matt Flynn (a West Coast offense guy) who may be available.

The next Scott Mitchell or Kurt Warner (in terms of bust or boom, not comparing him to Warner in talent so don't get your panties in a bunch). He's a free agent so GB would have to franchise him (he's not going to sign a contract with them) @ $14M which would be $6M more than Rodgers if they want to keep him and try to trade him. He'll be a free agent. Boy gonna get paid one way or another.

Better story would be " Why flynn may not answer the phone if it is Cleveland calling."

Nice...

Is he better than Matt Cassel. Who played more games for the New England Patriots and had an all-star year, went to Kansas City and has struggled.

I'm sure that the Holmgren still has his connections at GB that will convince him that answering the phone may be in his best interest, plus their is his agent, who won't be his agent much longer, if Flynn were to refuse more money.

Exactly, and go with the team that will offer you the best possible future, not just money.

flynn - ha! browns have as much chance chasing flynn as they would chasing the packs other qb.

January 8, 2012  01:17 PM ET

Ok, so I hear Cleveland is in the mix. Who else would be interested?

January 8, 2012  01:39 PM ET

That's why they hired Holgren, to make Executive decisions!!!

There are reasons some franchises are perpetually in the cellar ... and dumb moves like chasing the QB du jour with big money contracts is one. Flynn is a 7th round draftee with 2 good games under his belt subbing for a franchise QB on a top team. Matt Cassel looked pretty good subbing for a franchise QB on a top team for an entire season. Ask KC how that big contract is working out; 18-21 with an 80.0 passer rating.

I expect the Pack will re-sign him at a rate better (i.e., less expensive) than the franchise tag. If I were him, I'd be very happy with being a backup on a SB contender for a while longer.

My question exactly.

It isn't so much that Flynn wouldn't want to come to Cleveland (even via the "Franchise-tag"/trade route), it's more of the same with the Browns. If you don't surround him with talent, no quarterback will succeed in this league. The Browns need a playmaker at receiver, a playmaking running back, fix the right side of the line, a corner to go opposite of Joe Haden and at least one more pass rushing linebacker to team with Jackson and the emerging strength of a defensive line (Sheard and Taylor). He may not be the answer, but Holmgren and Heckert are here to MAKE these kind of evaluations and decisions...We'll be in Year 3 and still have very little to show for it.

Fat_Guy is on the money. He is exactly right. Johnny Unitas himself couldn't help the Browns if they don't first help themselves. they have too many other holes to fill for any QB to be successful. Colt McCoy is just an excuse. With some help he could have been fine. He is a leader and he is hard-nosed. Cleveland is just hoping for some sort of miracle. McCoy will go elsewhere and do well.

They need another QB like they need another head coach.Get rid of the recievers that cant catch a cold. How many passes were dropped after hitting them in the hands. they dont need a RB at this time if Hillis is willing to make a deal and stay. fix the weak areas this off season QB isnt one of them.

No, they don't NEED another QB, especially if they VASTLY improve the O-line and get someone else besides Greg Little to catch the ball. Still think that Evan Moore could be utilized more in a Jeremy Shockey mode, but apparently, the coaching staff doesn't agree. Running back, well, Hillis has burned a lot of bridges this season, but he still is only one year removed from a 1600 total yards and 13 TD season. But he needs a complimentary back (a la Sproles or Bradshaw) to stay healthy...and Montario Hardesty is not it. The main problem still lies in the fact that the Holmgren/Heckert/Shurmur regime think that their antiquated system will still work in the ever-evolving NFL and that the players they have are "good' for this system.
