11:37 AM ET 01.08 | Football coach Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State University officials have agreed upon a contract extension that would go through the 2019 season. The exact financial details were not released, but it is believed the deal will pay Gundy an average of $3.7 million annually. It is believed that OSU initially offered Gundy a $1 million a year raise to $3.1 million per year, while Gundy's agent, Jimmy Sexton, was asking for something in the $4 million range. According to Business Insider in November, only four college football coaches make $4 million a season: Texas' Mack Brown ($5.19 million), Alabama's Nick Saban ($4.833 million), Oklahoma's Bob Stoops ($4.075 million) and Ohio State's Urban Meyer ($4 million, on a contract just signed).

Why not shell out the money? That was a nice BCS bowl win against Stanford. Also, he puts an exciting team on the field and brings in lots of fans.

The guy's a kook. Never enter into a long term agreement with a kook.

When the NCAA proposed a $2000 per player stipend, schools argued they couldn't afford it. Gundy just received a $1.6M per year raise from a $2.1M salary. The incremental $1.6M alone would pay 800 stipends per year. There are only 229 scholarship athletes total at OSU - stipends would cost only $458,000.

Funny how money is only an issue when it comes to compensating players, not coaches.

Good argument htimsr40.
I'm thinking Gundy's quote for contract negotiations was something like, "I'm a winner... I want 4.0 million!"
