08:13 AM ET 01.10 | Juan Nicasio's story may unfold as one of this season's most uplifting in the Mile High City. While the lack of a veteran starting pitcher has left many Rockies fans uneasy about the team's rotation, the progress of [Nicasio] has been a bright spot. The right-hander's remarkable recovery from a broken neck has continued in the Dominican Republic. Five months after a line drive off his head and a subsequent fall broke his C1 vertebra, Nicasio has begun facing hitters, leaving him on pace to compete for a rotation spot in spring training. ... Nicasio, 24, is throwing only fastballs and changeups, typical of pitchers this time of year who eschew breaking balls.

QUOTE(#2):

Best of luck to him. Hope he continues to recover, and is able to compete at the MLB level again. It'll take a lot of guts to overcome being gun shy after getting beaned like that.

I agree -- best of luck and a remarkable story. But wow -- 2 in 3 years. First, Mike Coolbaugh in Tulsa (Rox AA team) then Nicasio last season.

Nice story, but the Rockies need more than this guy for a chance to win the NL West.
