Giants, Lincecum haven't talked in a month

08:21 AM ET 01.12 | San Francisco has more than a small item of unfinished business this offseason. The Giants have Ryan Vogelsong under contract, but the heaviest case in their arbitration file is yet to be resolved. They still must come to terms with Tim Lincecum. The Giants and Lincecum's representatives have not spoken in over a month. Rick Thurman, the agent for the two-time Cy Young award winner, told me today via text message that he is "just preparing his arbitration brief" and has had no dialogue with the club since the winter meetings in early December. That's not necessarily a bad sign. In fact, the Giants and Lincecum will make two very big statements one week from today. That's when the two sides will exchange arbitration figures.

Tim will jot his down on a zig-zag...

Cain will be leaving the Giants next offseason and Lincecum the following.

Management has squandered this fantastic rotation that they've had by not providing any offense. How many games do they expect Lincecum to lose 2-1 before he's fed up? My gut says there's always been too many. With both Pujols and Fielder on the market this year, the Giants were in a good position to show their pitchers that they were serious about providing some run support. Instead, they want to hope that Buster Posey is going to save the day.

You could be right. Not much effort taken to improve the offense.

MLB Hot Stove has been very tepid this off-season since Pujols came off the market.

Not much? Practically none. They traded for Melky Cabrera's fluke season and Angel Pegan.

Of course, Giants fans will tell you that Buster Posey is returning, so that's going to save the day.

He's a good young catcher, no doubt, but the fact is his OPS is lower than Carlos Santana's. I don't think any Giants fans would be looking at Santana as the team's savior if they somehow acquired him. Much like the Giants as a whole, Buster Posey is currently overrated due to the team's unlikely postseason run in 2010.

they have operated this way for years...But then they play in the NL West and may be counting on not getting into an arms race as has developed in the usually restrained AL West.
