Orpik on Crosby: Not anywhere close to return

08:45 AM ET 01.12 | At the very least, Sidney Crosby was with the Penguins Wednesday night, just not on the ice. Crosby, who has been out since Dec. 8, joined the Penguins on this trip, which will continue in South Florida on Friday. He watched Wednesday's game from the press box and is expected to skate in Florida, but Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said prior to the game that there is still no timetable for Crosby's return. Crosby's teammates don't anticipate him riding to the rescue any time soon. "I don't think he's anywhere close to coming back, so you can't really wait for him," defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "The guys that are going to pull us out of this aren't Sid or (Kris Letang); it's the guys in this room."

Duh. Then retire, or speak to the media for an update (he's supposed to speak to the media in a day or two - let me save you the suspense: "No timetable, progressing...blah, blah..."), and your fans...they deserve it. This **** is a distraction to the team, and the are crapping the bed in the meantime. His going on the trip, and "skating" is nothing more than a "morale boost" for the team, but I see it as a distraction and false hope. Too little, too late. Like Orpik, we are becoming annoyed. Shut it down for the season. Fighting with Washington for 8th seed? Pathetic.

As a fan i know this sucks to watch. We went through it with Lindros and Primeau. It sucks the energy out of a team. Then when they finally get going without said player, he comes back in the line up, jumbles the chemistry they built without him and in a couple games gets hurt and the process starts all over again.
As far as shutting it down for the year, if you get in the playoffs, wouldn't you like him back in the lineup for that? Then again if you put him on LTIR you can use the cap space for a rental. I guess you coulod go either way with it.

I don't see why they just don't put him on LTIR and make come cap space if he's this bad. If he feels he's that bad I would think he would volunteer it for the better of the team.

Well, hopefully, we can keep it mature, but I know I am asking for a lot.
Regardless of his status and whether he took a pee w/o a headache, this team has to find a way to win w/o him...which isn't happening.
They have bigger problems right now.
The "Crosby Distraction" only makes things worse, as I have come to realize.

I said on his first long term IR time that it was not that hit(s) that were of concern , it was the next one when he gets back. Horrible prophesy but here it is. What a sad waste of an amazing talent.At best he will have periods of brilliance as it all winds down

I'm not ready to stick a fork in him yet, but i wonder if he has given any though about retire ment yet. I would sit him out for the season whether he ends up being ready or not. Next year give him a poer forward left wing and a goon right wing for his line and tell him to keep his **** head up.
He'll have protection and 2 guys that can go to the dangerous areas. He just has to make good passes and cherry pick and he'll be fine. Every player responds to this trauma differently. When Randy Jones pasted Pat Bergeron's head into the boards folks thought he was done. He's up for a Selke this year.
IMO he needs the year off, not only from the game, but from the media and all the bullcrap so he can heal in peace. If it doesn't work out next year then hang em up and get a front office job. Be the youngest coach in the NHL or something.

Good post, Crom. And you are right, every player reacts different. So to say, why did this one come back in a week, and Crosby is still out...?
Plus, there are rumors saying he suffers, and is suffering from sinus headaches, so he is having a hard time dechiphering. If there is any truth in that, or if that is going to be a problem...who knows? Might always be a problem with Letang and his migraines too. He had them before the concussion.
Not ready to put a fork in him either, but I agree with you, shut him down til next year, and even if the Pens don't make the playoffs...call it another bad luck year regarding injuries, and hope for a banner one next season. So be it.
Our goodn btw, has been put on waivers.

Coach Dan Bylsma said before Pittsburgh's game at the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night that Crosby will skate during the team's current road trip, which includes visits to the Florida Panthers on Friday and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.
