Lions looking to lock up Megatron

08:06 AM ET 01.13 | Lions general manager Martin Mayhew looked back on the season Thursday and declared it a "big step" forward. In three full seasons at the helm, Mayhew has transformed the Lions from a hideous wretch to a playoff team full of good players who would attract suitors on the open market. Mayhew has to work some contract magic to re-sign stars like free-agent defensive end Cliff Avril, linebacker Stephen Tulloch and, "in the near future," receiver Calvin Johnson. ... Mayhew said Johnson's cap commitment is big but "workable" and joked, "I'm not going to suggest a pay cut for him." "I think we have an opportunity to work on (a new deal for Johnson) this off-season," Mayhew said.

DBs have been looking to lock him up all season. It hasn't gone too well for them.

If they let Johnson go, they'll be back to being a hideous wretch.

"Hideous wretch?" Who writes this stuff?

I think this is a dandy idea. Jim dandy!

If some DB shuts Megatron down, he has a ready-made nickname.

If the thread is about Megatron, why is there a pic of Stafford?

This is the reason I've been thinking Megatron is Stafford's nickname for the past two years.

No doubt he has been a force in this offense. Pay the man and keep him happy.

If they can't keep Megatron, Starscream is more than willing to take over.

Its unfortunate but I think Avril is a goner in Detroit, he will command too much and they have a lot invested in their D line. Well, unless he can play DB too???

"I'm not going to suggest a pay cut for him."

Nice to see they still have a sense of humor in Detroit.

I love the off season and watching teams scramble to keep their teams intact while other franchises are set to plunder what stars they can get to beef up their teams (2011 Eagles anyone). Throw in crooked agents and it becomes a real soap opera.

If it can get screwed up, count on the lions to do it!! There management is terrible!!!
