Sparano may scale back playbook for Sanchez

08:07 AM ET 01.13 | Mark Sanchez seems to have fewer friends in New York these days, but Tony Sparano could help rehab the QB's image. Sparano believes in a power-running game (how long before he's uttering the words "Ground & Pound"?) and he emphasizes pass protection with the tight ends and running backs. In other words, he's not going to leave Wayne Hunter singled up against pass-rusher Jason Babin, as [Brian Schottenheimer] did last month in Philadelphia. Sparano's philosophy should help Sanchez, who needs the support of a strong running attack, but it remains to be seen whether he tweaks the passing game to suit Sanchez. ... Look for Sparano to scale back the playbook. Schottenheimer ran a high-volume offense and it overwhelmed Sanchez at times.

Sparano will give Sanchez his own special playbook. And some crayons to use with it. Bright, pretty colors, of course, to keep Sanchez interested.

He could bring a copy of the Chad Henne Playbook with him. As I recall, that worked out just great for Miami.

Sanchez left school early. He can't handle the big words in the Chad Henne playbook. On the bright side, playbooks do have a lot of pictures.

Mark Sanchez, you just became a game manager. What are you going to do next?

They don't even have to ask Sanchez which plays he feels confident with. Just look through his playbook and see which ones he drew smiley faces and happy little suns next to.

Jets and Raiders. Putting the fun back into dysfunctional.

That's the ticket.

Dumb down the playbook as much as they can... if Sanchez tanks again next season, it's all on him. No excuses about bad play-calling or anything like that.

Yeah, Sparano demonstrated his keen play-calling skills with the Dolphins.

Wait ...

See Dick..See Spot. That will work!

And there's a player mentioned, too, not just coaches.

Seriously. You should know better by now.

I keep waiting for a thread about how well OchoCinco is picking up the Pats offense. And waiting. And waiting. And ...

January 13, 2012  08:40 AM ET

This might just help the kid. Unless Peyton Manning is on the market. . .then they dump him like a hot potato.

January 13, 2012  08:42 AM ET

I thought the playbook was already scaled back. What's left? Run, run, run, punt?

Sanchez loves musicals, right? That's where they got that ridiculous picture, after all. So, get him a playbook that plays a little tune when you open it up. Something upbeat, like "Pop Goes the Fumble."
