08:27 AM ET 01.13 | An unsettling landscape may drive a pair of conferences together. Presidents from the Mountain West and Conference USA will meet Sunday in Dallas to discuss forming a new league, CBSSports.com has learned. The move was not described as a full-on merger and talks are still in the early stages. According to a source, the new league could be football only, all sports or some other consolidation. Two sources said not all of the two conferences' presidents will attend the meeting. But there is urgency on both sides. ... Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson told CBSSports.com last week that he is concerned about membership issues in light of recent defections.

Yep...all this "mega" conference stuff is a bunch of <hit IMHO.

That being said, these two conferences are very similar for the most part.

Yah. It stinks that Houston and SMU are leaving C-USA and BSU/SDSU are leaving the MWC.

On the plus side if SDSU plays UCONN its an easy road trip for me now to see the Aztecs play.

Why merge? It looks like the auto-qualifier is dead in the BCS going forward, so why the push to build a stronger conferene. IMO, these teams have a better shot at a BCS game ala Boyzee, schedule a tough OOC and dominate a weak conference. Why make that path more difficult?

Good point. They must be thinking strength in numbers and assume some more will be raided. Can't see one any conference would want but I couldn't figure out the love affair with SMU, Houston, UCF and SDSU either. SMU, Houston and UCF haven't really set the world on fire in C-USA like Boise has in the WAC/MWC.

TV deals. The remaining teams wouldn't get squat in either conference, combined they may be able to at least stay status quo

You think a merger would assist in a TV deal? I just don't see the appeal to get a major tv deal done even if these two merge......ESECPN still won't be beating down the doors.

$$ has to be involved somewhere......

He doesn't want to spend the time it takes to coach, but get in on all the entertainment bennies of AD, since they only wine and dine, right?
