09:15 AM ET 01.14 | Has NASCAR turned the corner? Is a thrilling finish to the 2011 season combined with higher TV ratings and better attendance at many tracks enough to put NASCAR back on a steady path of growth? No one is more excited about the potential of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series season than NASCAR's top executives, but there also is no one more cautious. "It's a moving target, whether it's the economy or different elements that affect the way that you do things or causes you to do things," NASCAR President Mike Helton said Friday at Daytona International Speedway. "I think what we're beginning to see is the return of the level of energy around attendance at the race tracks, viewership, (things) that contribute to the interest level of sponsors and other partners to be involved in a sport. "There is always a lot of work to maintain."

No doubt that the prices are prohibitive for many in this economy. For a sport that likes to think of itself as blue collar, having to pay $75-100 bucks for a good seat is a bit much.

Eliminate the 3, 4 or 5 car "Super Teams", lower ticket and concession prices, no more guaranteed spots, everybody must qualify every week and confiscate and melt every restrictor plate in North America. For starters.

Don't worry folks, NASCAR will turn back around the corner and back to "normal" come February! The end of 2011 was a aberration they will make sure never happens again!

Paid over $100 dollars for tickets to the Kentucky race last year..and YES.. I got to see the whole race.. but the concession prices are what really bit.. they were just outrageous..
I agree with you on the no more guaranteed spots.. make 'em earn their way into the race and none of this ''buying points'' from other race teams that couldn't field teams this year..give the drivers a little incentive to have to qualify.. but everyone knows.. there is no way thats going to change

Awww Shucks ''Wildfan''

No more guaranteed starting spots WOULD be ideal, but lowering the number of locked in drivers from 35 to 25 might be a more realistic goal for right now. But as long as Mike Helton is calling the shots I don't expect any real improvement in things. He's the one most responsible, IMHO, for making NASCAR the joke that it now is.

I don't see the economy improving that much to see a boost in Nascar sponsorship. The France family and Helton needs to do something to get the boredom out of the races. From around the July 4th race at Daytona on through the end of the season, I found my interest in the sport dwindled. Keep in mind I used to plan my Sundays around the races. Now I just find I just don't care as much because the sport seems stagnate.

Just watched the interviews after the JPM, Jooonya and Burton dust up today. Burton was calm because he didn't know who caused the incident but why is Jooonya so laid back. Not a Jooonya fan but he could have thrown a little shot at JPM, show a LITTLE emotion. The Opie attitude is O.K. at times but when you get hit stupidly, at least say something.
