08:47 AM ET 01.16 | Rick DiPietro's star-crossed career with the Islanders took another unfortunate turn with the news that he will require yet another surgery, this one for a sports hernia, that will keep him from the lineup for the remainder of the season. [DiPietro], has played all of 47 games in four years for the New York Islanders, winning 14 of them. For that, he has been paid $18 million. All that remains on his contract is another nine years and $40.5 million. If the Isles don't use the insurance model and push DiPietro out, they could buy out the goalie for an 18-year-period, and all it will cost them is $27 million or $1.5 million a season -- providing them a $2.5 million savings against the salary cap.

I know there was a DP thread on the wknd, but I can barely get the site to work and am NOT prepared to go digging, so my question:
Is this the single worst contract ever signed in American professional sports? Any other contenders, really? Mo Vaughan and Vernon Wells stick out, and Gilbert Arenas would too if not for the buyout that came after the lockout.

I left a good photo of Ricky DL. It might be worth the trip. :-)

Who cut his hair, Bobby Clarke?
Also, I just KNEW I was walking into Burke-central there for some reason. You always brighten my day Nucky.

Like Stranger said, "not the best parodies," but the best I could find.
LMAO at Bobby Clarke.

The one they have posted above with the pink pads is a pretty good substitute...and he's actually making a save (although that may be in warm up).

Not even close with Vernon Wells. He was at least tradeable and can play.
Mo Vaugn closer but he had 2 really good years with Anaheim.
Worse contracts in baseball IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he hurt when they signed him to this huge contract ?

Follow up Q to the "worst contract in sports history?" posted above:
"Is cutting him loose at the end of the year and taking the cap hit, the biggest no-brainer in sports history?"

Just because VW was traded doesn't mean (AT ALL) that he was "tradeable". How AA pulled that one off I will never comprehend.
Also, funny that these guys both went to Anaheim...

Please stop...
I burned my finger on fireplace glass on Saturday. It stung for a while. RDP would've wound up with a leg laceration somehow if he were in my shoes...

From the organization that brought you Alexei Yashin. Gotta love those 10 year deals.

!5 years you must have got the 10 in your head for the amount of time that he'll spend on the IR list during said contract

Certainly wasn't me. I doubt this guy is cocky anymore. I'm not losing any sleep over his absense but for all the guy has been through, he's never really let his frustration show and never really done anything but show a pretty good attitude.
It's a shame. The deal Wang gave him was just ridiculous, that goes without saying. It was a lot to live up to and he never even came close.
As an Isles fan, I just hope the guy retires.

Out for the year with a sports hernia? I was back to work in a week.

I gotta think he's on IR so insurance can pick up the cost of his payroll. There's no way these small injuries are that severe. Wang found some sort of loophole where the payroll is picked up by insurance, it hits against the cap and he doesn't have to pay out anymore to hit the cap floor.
I wish NHL contracts were like NFL contracts. This guy would be unemployed quicker than you can say Ryan Leaf.
