08:26 AM ET 01.17 | The Yankees have reportedly contacted free agent Hideki Matsui about a possible return to the Bronx as a DH. Matsui played last season for the A's, for whom he batted .251 with 12 homers and 72 RBIs last season. ... The Yankees reportedly also have interest in Johnny Damon, who is no longer wanted by the Rays. But a source tells NJ.com "nothing's going on as of now," and Damon on Monday had no comment when contacted by The Post. Carlos Pena, 33, told MLB Radio the Yankees had made contact with him, according to their Twitter account. The Yankees were expected to use Jesus Montero as DH, but he was traded to the Mariners last week in a four-player deal that included pitcher Michael Pineda.

Matsui, Proven DH!!

Listen Alacran. I know you're all pumped up because there's a thread about one of your fellow chinamen. But the thing about Matsui is, you have to wait around for him to get going until after the All Star break. There is no more predictable player when it comes to knowing when you'll get production out of him than Matsui. The Yankees DH spot is too crucial to let it flounder for three months while godzilla waits for the weather to warm up.

PS - please, God. Not Carlos Pena. I'd rather have Damon. But let's forget all this and trade Hughes for Butler.

Carlos Pena seems to good defensively to waste as a DH.

Fixed.

Get Pena and platoon him at DH with Jones. Pena could also play 1st base when we rest Tex.
We should not go back to Matsui or Damon as much as I like those guys. We have to move forward.

that too.

Should have signed Big Papi when they had the chance.

Thirty-two days. Pitchers and Catchers. Eat it, betches.

Oh come on. Think of all those hot summer nights. Think of the air conditoning relief Pena's flailing away will provide to the people in the $1,000 seats. Butler for Hughes? <snort> The Yanks will have to give a hell of lot more than that for Butler. Damon is the way to go. Make him the primary DH and rotate ARoid and Jeter in to give them a rest every now and then. The Rays made a mistake signing Scott instead of Damon.

Good luck with that.

Yankees pursuing over-the-hill free agents? Really?

That sounds great. Subsequently, I think the Yankees should trade Cano to the Indians for Matt LaPorta and pay 2/3rds of Cano's salary.

Morning moose.

Yes, really. They're also putting together what is, at this point, probably the best team in the majors.

Yeah, I'd take that deal.

I guess the the trade the Yankees made hasn't reached Cleveland yet. They made a deal for 2 power arms in their 20's.

January 17, 2012  10:02 AM ET

Two power arms? I know they got Pineda, but who's the second?

January 17, 2012  10:04 AM ET

Morning Sith.

Hey man, the rumor is out there. I'm just going with the flow. If it's even remotely possibly, I'm all for it.
