Colts moves suggest Manning is next to go

08:13 AM ET 01.18 | The firing of Jim Caldwell may be read as a message that goes beyond his record in Indianapolis. What Tuesday's announcement suggested to me is, they've moved on, emotionally if not physically and officially, from Peyton Manning. Time and again, team owner Jim Irsay talked about 1998, the year he fired general manager Bill Tobin and coach Lindy Infante, then let quarterback Jim Harbaugh go, replacing them with Bill Polian, Jim Mora and a No. 1 draft choice named Peyton Manning. ... If Manning is coming back, my sense is you keep the old gang together. You keep Caldwell, all the offensive coaches, the old system fully intact while going for a final Super Bowl run or two.

Peyton is going to have to learn a new system at the age of 36 whether he stays or goes.

Don't know whether it's stupid or sane, Mick...
But having watched enough mediocre football locally, sometimes it's just best to blow it up and start over.

Probably best in the long run. GM and coach are gone, so I think this is all a prelude to a complete turnover, including Peyton.

hard to keep that much money tied up in one player, esp. when he could be one hard hit away from being crippled for life...

Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning transformed the entire state of Indiana from a basketball crazed area to one that was fooball frenzy. If the Colts want to totally alienate their fan base, then go ahead and do something about Peyton leaving. I know some will say it's a business decision, but do the Colts really want to go down the road of Peyton's first few years? You know the ones with hardly any wins and fans wearing sacks on their heads due to embarrassment.

But unless you face the inevitable sooner rather than later you will end up like the Cowboys. A mediocre or worse team for 16 years now.

I have a feeling whoever bring Peyton in will tailor their offense to him. He basically was his own O-coordinator in Indy and I wouldn't see that changing anywhere else.
