08:04 AM ET 01.19 | The winds of change are howling in Indianapolis, where the next order of business is finding a head coach. What the Colts need is someone with a unique understanding of football who has been a success on every level. They must not make a decision based on what is best for the team right now. They must make a decision that is good for today, but even better for tomorrow. With that in mind, if I were in Grigson's shoes, I would spend time with University of Oregon coach Chip Kelly and try to convince him to become the next head coach of the Colts. Kelly is smart, innovative and has an appetite for learning. ... Do you think Jimmy Johnson was ready for pro football when he came into the NFL in 1989? No, but by 1991, he was ready.

Every team needs a Chip.

He can move his above board recruiting exploits to the NFL!

Replace Chan Gailey. Then he could be a Buffalo Chip.

Good choice....a Chip off the old block

January 19, 2012  08:19 AM ET

Do you think Chip Kelly is the next Jimmy Johnson?

January 19, 2012  08:22 AM ET

There is no way Chip gives up what he has at Oregon to go to Indy!!!! Although it would be interesting to see...

Why not try Steve Spurrier, while you're at it?

He was ready. He just had very little talent to work with the first few years.

Don't know much about Pac 12 teams other than the defenses are terrible...so with that being said maybe he would fit in the Indy mold for the teams since 1998

You've got to stay one step ahead of the NCAA investigators. See Pete Carroll.

He had already coached the pro team in Miami. The Hurricanes.

Yeah the only difference was the Cowboys had less money to spend on players

Back then Miami would have beat the Cowboys.

Beating up on those weak defenses out west doesn't take much innovation. Succeeding in the NFL will take a little more.

good one. "best team money could buy".

between Jimmy, Carol, and others that have fled sanctions at the NCAA level to the pros - the list of those that have made it is very very short.

this is pure speculation from some stupid blogger anyway - why would chip want to leave the confirms of Nike U where he is worshiped to go to Indy where Peyton sends him home wimpering on a daily basis? you might as well give the HC to Peyton and let him work the transition over to Luck.

Pete Carroll is having the same problem about now. A salary cap sucks when you're used to spending whatever you want.

You know how these coaches jump ship for the opportunity at more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

January 19, 2012  08:42 AM ET

Plus, if he ain't in the SEC, he really don't have nothing.

Let the Chips fall where they may?
