08:09 AM ET 01.19 | Theo Epstein already has a contract, but what he's worth to the Red Sox remains unclear. Deciding compensation for [Epstein's] departure from Boston is now in the hands of commissioner Bud Selig after the Red Sox requested it, deciding that enough was enough. ... [Epstein] and his Boston successor, Ben Cherrington, had negotiated on-and-off since before the World Series, when a frustrated Selig told the two sides to get down to business by themselves. So what is a general manager worth? Well, sources claim the Red Sox have requested Cubs starter Matt Garza, but names have varied over the more than three months. However, it is believed the Cubs will have to at least part with a top-level prospect.

....one does not pay for past performance....current results in boston last two years = zero, despite having the best team in baseball history.....therefore epstein is only worth a bucket of fried chicken and a six pack of beer...

Way to nickle and dime them Theo. Stick to offering them party favors. Now the reluctant and indecisive Dud Bud must decide. He'll no doubt seek an outside source to make the decision for him

Work out a trade for Garza. Let the Cubs keep their top prospect and have Boston throw in a couple of their own.

I don't understand why the Cubs would want to part with Garza.

Obviously the Cubs think he's worth a lot. They have invested a lot of money and given him a lot of responsibility, making him their top executive and putting him in charge of basically of their whole organization.

Send Barkman to Boston. They need someone to blame.

They don't. The media just likes to kick his name around, repeatedly and without end

Is Theo Epstein worth more than Ozzie Guillen?f not, you have to wonder why the Cubbies hired him to run their baseball operations. If he is, the compensation package has to at least equal the two good prospects the Marlins paid for Guillen, and probably should be a lot more. I think the Cubbies are nuts trusting Bud Selig to decide the compensation.

Who is Barkman??? Do you mean Steve Bartman? It wasn't his fault...it was Alex Gonzalez booting a sure double play at SS...or Dusty Baker for leaving Mark Prior in way too long...if you actually watched that game you would know this

Let's not drudge that up again. Just give the Sox some prospects and be done with it

You haven't been paying attention. They already laid blame at the feet of that pill popping ex-manager and popeye's chicken.

Theo, there's no Market for Gaza, for the Price your asking, everyone has either Reloaded or are using other alternatives!!!

January 19, 2012  12:00 PM ET

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Boston announce the replacement for Epstein before he had signed with the Cubs? Granted, they should receive some sort of compensation but how much for a guy that you've publicly stated that you no longer want?

Send em Soriano and a boatload of money to cover the bulk of his contract. The names I've seen bandied about (Garza and before that Starlin Castro) are far to much to pay.
