08:12 AM ET 01.20 | There's something very humanizing about meeting a player's mom, and it can even put the brakes on an incendiary column. This is the night to eviscerate that kid, just in time for his 24th birthday on Thursday. Until you meet that kid's mother. "He is not a knucklehead," Pamela McGee says, sitting behind the basket an hour before her son, JaVale, and the Wizards would stun Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder on their best night of the season. ... "JaVale is a good kid. My son is special. He has gifts you can't teach: hands, height and heart. If I'm the Wizards and I'm really trying to build a franchise, really committed to rebuilding and developing, I would nurture that talent. I would help a kid like JaVale the best I could."

We'll I'll give her props for standing up for her son... Gloria will never do that leaving us to wonder what she does with her time...

Sure she thinks he isnt a "knucklehead" its his freaking mom!!!! All moms think their kids are great....

To bad when she was naming ALL his good qualities "hands, heart, and height" that i guess she couldnt jump the shark and say he had a BRAIN.....Lord he does some stupid stuff out on the court....

The she questions the franchise about nurturing him and helping him? They are they are trying to teach him not to play like an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"He is not a knucklehead,"

Question; what would you expect his Mom to say?

Exactly. She would say hes a special kid if the joke had raped half the cheerleading squad and robbed the owner at gunpoint.

The difference is Gloria has laid down for her son...!

"Awwww...thanks mom, that helped a lot. None of the other guys will get on me about my mommy coming to my defense. You made my life so much better."

When she says he was a "special kid," does that mean he was riding the short bus?

Flip didn't throw him under a bus. Flip sat him down so he could reflect on what it takes to establish a winning culture. Unfortunately, McGee still doesn't get it. He's still selfish, self-absorbed, self-centered, and clueless. But Mama thinks it's OK, so that makes it all OK.

As a grown man is there anything more embarrassing than your mom having to come to your defense?

January 20, 2012  11:41 AM ET

umm. i think they are trying to help him the best they can by trying to show him how to be a professional. flip isn't a shrink or a life coach. what he has to offer is insight on what it means to be a pro in the nba. if the kid doesn't want it then he can flame out of the league, blow all his money and live under a bridge. or he can get his act together. his call.

Facts are facts. When your team has 2 wins, somthing ain't rightAnd no one is above blameMuch like portland did a few yeas ago when they had talented but troubled kids and they broke them all up to start over......Washington needs to do the same thing before they waste any more time

Im not sure the team is full of knuckleheads tho...its moreso they just have a mis-mosh of players. There is no direction of the team..are they run n gun, half court, what? They have no definitive style, making it harder for the players to utilize their skill sets

With that being said, not excusing anyone's behavior but the king & prince knuckleheads (Arenas & Crittendon are gone). IDK what these guys have done to earn that title, yet

DING, DING, DING!!! We have a winner!!

Ms. McGee was a high school basketball coach in Sacramento after her stint playing in the WNBA. She was such a "knucklehead" herself on the bench that she was close to getting run out of town. Before that could happen JaVale got drafted and she was GONE, GONE, GONE!!
