08:18 AM ET 01.20 | For the first time since 2002, the Red Sox may wind up in arbitration with one of their players. Speaking before the Boston Baseball Writers dinner, David Ortiz said, at this moment, he doesn't expect a deal to get done prior to an arbitration hearing. "I don't know," said the DH when asked if he expected an agreement to be reached before a hearing. "It doesn't seem like it right now." Ortiz submitted a figure of $16.5 million for his arbitration case Tuesday, while the Red Sox came in at $12.65 million. According to a source, the slugger had previously been offered a two-year deal by the Sox, at $9 million season. "I guess that's part of the game," he said. "From a business standpoint, that's how it goes."

That's a ridiculous some of money for a DH, no matter how productive he is.

When Travis **** Hafner is making 13 million, 16.5 for Ortiz really isn't that crazy.

How about this. Neither should make 13 million.

He'd better be in top shape come the beginning of the season or all that good will with the fans is going out the window. I'm glad management is holding firm.

Best not to say anything, Papi. Just focus on getting in shape and doing your job.

Make or break year for the big guy. He's a one-dimensional player. For that kind of money, he needs to do that one dimension very, very, very well or he'll sit his remaining year.

He should take the $12.xx million and shut up already!!! Please forgive me folks, but I have endured two pay cuts and a cut in hours, got laid off for three months, then got rehired and took another paycut even though my job workload has only increased by about 1/3 :[ These millionaires need to shut their traps and take the !@#$%^& money ... and don't get me started on the DB owners throwing coin around like it's burning a hole in their pockets( see Jason Werth)!!!

Bingo! Just because Cleveland was stupid doesn't mean Boston has to be.

It is what it is. The first DH to make ten million dollars set the market, and off it goes. It's a runaway train. I mean, look at Cole Hamels' agent saying "Jeff Weaver money" isn't gonna do it. It really SHOULD do it, but he's just doing his best to raise the ceiling so his client can make more money and so he in turn can make more money. You can blame the agents, but the owners should take a piece of it as well. And proponents of the luxury tax over the salary cap. It's going to remain out of control, and at the end of the day, it's the fans who will take the most punishment in ticket prices and other purchase costs.

Since your hours were cut, put that to your advantage. Spend that time at your local batting cage and work on hitting the inside slider. Ortiz only has 1-2 more seasons left with the Red Sox and then they'll be looking for another DH. If you use your time wisely, you can get some of those dollars buring a hole in the DB owner's pockets.

Looking at his .309 batting average last year, along with his 96 RBI and 154 OPS+, along with his .337 batting average with men on base, I'm gonna have to say that your post rates pretty high on the retardo scale.

That's unneccessary.

Give the man his money, respect and plant a statue of him in front of Fenway.
