08:26 AM ET 01.20 | Taylor Hall, when a teammate accidentally landed a skate on is head, landed in the middle of a renewed debate about wearing helmets in warmups. "I asked him if he was still good looking and he said, 'Mom, I look like Frankenstein.' Maybe it will send a message to everyone about how important it is to wear a helmet," [Hall's] mother, Kim Strba, told the Edmonton Journal. "Maybe it will be a wake-up call. Unfortunately, Taylor is going to be the one remembered for bringing about the change." ... [According to the Edmonton Journal's interview]with Strba, via phone from the family home in Kingston, Ont., Hall will "definitely" be wearing a helmet when he returns to the Edmonton Oilers lineup.

I have 15 stitches on my hairline/forehead because I took an ill fitting helmet off for warm-ups 25 years ago. I was 20 feet off to one side of the net and took a shot right off the noggin from my own brother!

Fortunately, my brother sucks horrifically at hockey and shoots like a girl or I would have really been in trouble. Many of the other guys in that men's league would have killed me, but then again then don't shoot the puck 20' wide of the net.

Needless to say I made the adjustments to the Helmet ASAP when I got home from the emergency room and kept it on for warm-ups from then on.

Oh yeah and I'm 6'4" on skates so you could say the shot was a bit high too.

It's sad that something terrible has to happen to someone before we really take some safety precautions seriously. Hopefully this doesn't happen again anytime soon!

It's not like this kind of stuff happens all the time in practice. It was an accident. If you take precautions for everything that "might" happen, you are going to have a bland and boring life, and in the end bad luck is probably going ot get you anyway. That being said, it is a good idea to wear a bucket in practice, i always did.

Ouch, that looks to be about 30-35 stitches. Damn.

My cut followed my hairline and is nearly invisible all these years later.

January 20, 2012  10:02 AM ET

Is your hairline still in the same place all these years later? lol

(Sorry B-Rex, I saw the shot, there was no danger, so I took it.)

Amazingly enough, yes. Even though I'm 51, I still haven't started losing my hair or going gray. Can't understand why since I look just like my old man who was mostly bald in his late 20's.

Oh well, I'll take it.

I'm just the opposite Rex. My dad, who is 87, has a full head of hair, and I have a receding hairline, along with 2 of my brothers.

What little hair my father had left didn't start turning gray until he was well into his 60's, so I wouldn't mind if I could replicate that. He's 82 now and still going strong.

Don't make me start a discussion about last night's game!

Not grey, but pulling back. But at 56 I have 4 times as much as my 2 younger brothers.

I think my overall thickness has to do with a crew cut as a youth. Neither of my brothers ever had a crew cut. With one your head gets colder so it thickens up it's cover? My theory and I'm sticking to it..

Looks like if it had been an inch or two lower he might not of played hockey again....

I have to concur. The last day of school always coincided with Dad taking us 4 boys down the basement and lopping off all the hair. Nothing like a fresh, tight #1 to start the summer.
