Richards unhappy with Cooke's 'cheap play'

08:20 AM ET 01.21 | Rangers center Brad Richards was held out of practice Friday due to a stiff neck he suffered after a hit by Penguins forward Matt Cooke in Thursday's 4-1 loss. Richards, who said he plans to be in the lineup for Saturday's afternoon game in Boston, was unhappy with what he described as a "cheap play." Cooke was not penalized. "He came up beside me, from behind, and he slew-footed me," Richards said in the locker room after practice Friday. "I've played enough games to know what a slew foot is. He didn't come up and hit me face-to-face. It's a cheap play. It's not like that's the first time he's ever done it."

Wait, this can't be right. I bet Burnside (at ESPN) must be embarrassed after saying how Cooke was such a shining star example of how an individual can change their play and perception in the League... well that is embarrassed if he actually had any acumen as a hockey reporter/analyst.

The only thing Richards left out was stating he knows cheap and dirty after playing with Ott and Ribeiro.
And I say this as a Bruins homer, ironic that he'll probably see a lot of the Bergeron line today and Marchand (the hit was in the back of Salo's thigh, but the suspension was warranted for the slew-foot I did in a previous game).

My bad, I got Cooke's quote mixed up with Steckel's.
I dunno, maybe I'm just a Penguin fan, but it looked to me like Matthew was just trying to poke check the puck and bumped into him from behind. I honestly didn't see his foot slew anything. Looked to me like a little bump followed by a big dive.

You're right Rex. Matthew noticed there was a small build-up of snow on the back of Brad's socks and he tried to rub it off for him. Such a selfless humanitarian.

You know I looked at several times and as much as I want to, I just don't see anything wrong.
Cooke does make minimal contact with the back of Richard's thigh and appears to want to follow through with his foot, but Brad went down so damn easy it was too late to kick his leg out from under him.
Could someone call SI and have them take this story down before anyone else sees that I was sticking up for this DB?
