Buckeyes feeling scholarship crunch

09:58 AM ET 01.22 | When Camren Williams declared via Twitter on Friday afternoon that he plans to sign with Ohio State, he became the 23rd commitment to Urban Meyer's first recruiting class, a group that is turning heads nationally with its escalator rise since Meyer was named coach on Nov. 28. But it also brings to mind the scholarship restrictions Meyer and his staff are working under as they seek a few more blue-chip prospects before the Feb.1 signing day. Because of NCAA sanctions, the Buckeyes can have no more than 82 players on scholarship for each of the next three seasons; the usual maximum is 85. A check of the updated roster on the school's website late last week showed 62 returnees who originally were scholarship players. Quick math would indicate that the Buckeyes already are three over at the moment, but now is where the juggling, shuffling and bookkeeping will start to come into play. That's because in this numbers game, the key day will be the first day of preseason practice in August.

3 commits over the limit? Someone is bound to get Sabaned.

Is it called scarlet and gray-shirting recruits at OSU?

"Quick math would indicate that the Buckeyes already are three over at the moment...", unless one learned math at an SEC school, which then would indicate 8 under at the moment.

Oh too late! 2 of the 62 have already taken medical redshirts.

With at least 7 highly sought-after recruits yet to commit, Meyer may need to turn on the charm and convince some players to ...

... leave for academic reasons...
... leave 'cause they "don't fit the new system" ...
... enroll at midyear so they can wink wink count towards last year's numbers...
... take a wink wink medical redshirt...
... enroll ... but wink wink don't take a scholly yet (grayshirt)...
...
... as long as they're gone BEFORE the start of fall practice (AFTER spring drills of course).

I am really impressed with the recruits so far.

players transfer, become uneligible or are released for other reasons...not uncommon

Urban will bail at first signs of trouble, the reason Urban left the SEC was because Saban is a better coach, and Urban knew that he could not compete on the same level as Saban at Alabama. So Urban to the Luckeyes is a perfect match a school that thinks it is better than it really is and a coach that has everyone convinced he is great. Will be fun watching this slowly fall apart over the next few years.

Someone should have told Urban that before he won those two national championships at Florida

And another otherwise valuable soul willing leaps into the pit.

The luckeyes? Wow this university is hated that much? That just seems funny to me considering how modest the SEC fans are.

And you do realize Saban coached at The Ohio State University right?

January 22, 2012  04:48 PM ET

Wait? What? Whoops, John Cooper might need for the NCAA to come look at OSU again. I cannot believe that OSU is engaging in oversigning when one of its own is running oversigning.com!!!

He won the first before Coach Saban came back to the NCAA. The 2nd one he did beat a Coach Saban team, but it was still rebuilding.

No dog in this fight but lead , follow, or get out of the way. Urban appears determined to lead. It's up to the rest of the Little 10(12?) to decide what to do.

I cannot wait for recruits to realize how smarmy this guy is. Just a little research shows all the lies he has publicly told.
