08:17 AM ET 01.25 | Don't count Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera among baseball fans who were surprised to learn that the Tigers signed Prince Fielder. It had apparently been discussed for nearly a week. "It was something we were talking about during the fan fest," Cabrera told Venezuelan newspaper Lider en Deporte late Tuesday. The club's annual Winter Caravan Tour made its rounds Thursday and Friday. Cabrera confirmed that the acquisition will result in him shifting to third base in 2012 -- a position he last played in 2008. "That is my natural position," Cabrera told Cesar Augusto Marque. The Tigers reportedly approached Cabrera about Fielder prior to the deal to gauge his interest in shifting to third and Cabrera didn't express concern.

We'll see if Cabrera can still play 3rd at a high level.

He would need to lose at least 30 lbs. I don't think this is a good idea at all.

Gotta hand it to Ilitch, they could have went the one season hasbeen route w/Damon or Vlad but went all in with the Prince. Not sorry to see him depart our NL Central.

I had read that they were going to alternate between 1B and DH.

He really hasn't played 3B full-time since his last season with the Marlins in '07'.

It is mighty generous of Cabrera to move; I wonder if the Tigers gre$$ed the wheels at all, or if it is indeed genuinely of no concern to him???

That wheel is already getting paid more than Verlander. He was paid $21 million last year, Verlander $29 million.
This must put the Tigers around $150 million payroll. They are going for it. Verlander has three more years at $20 million each year then UFA. That is their window I would think.

If you do not have incentives tied to your contract, there is no reason not to move. Just as long as the paycheck hits the bank, every week.

He couldn't play third at a high level in 2008. He was awful. He's only gonna be worse.

I hope Little Caesars Pizza isn't going to raise their prices. Ah, heck, don't like them anyways.

January 25, 2012  10:46 AM ET

The TIGERS have now a more powerful lineup and great pitching. As for third base Inge could not hit a lick, we lost his glove but the TIGERS gain even more hitting power. As for that st.louie fan you need to stop drinking that water out right out of the Mississppi it does cause major brain damage.
