Jackson squarely on Red Sox radar

08:14 AM ET 01.26 | Nearing spring training, the Red Sox are reportedly more likely to address their starting rotation needs through free agency rather than by way of trade. One potential solution: Edwin Jackson. Jackson, a free-agent right-hander, is mulling "a variety of options," agent Scott Boras said [Wednesday] in a phone conversation, and may reach a decision by week's end. Boras declined to confirm a Tweet from ESPN.com's Jim Bowden that the Red Sox have made an offer, but indications are that Jackson may be amenable to a one-year contract after initially seeking a multiyear deal. If that's the case, the Red Sox figure to be interested in the 28-year-old.

There's nothing left but 'potential solutions'.

QUOTE(#3):

He would be better than the 'risky' Oswalt. Go for it Boston.

A healthy Jackson would be better than an Oswalt on the DL. However a healthy Oswalt is hands-down better than Jackson. Either/both would help.

Either pitcher would be good for Boston to have in the mix. Ideally they have 4 or 5 people compete for the #4 and #5 spot in the rotation this spring, with a re-trained Bard being one of them.

if you can get him for one year it's a no brainer. He'll give you 32 starts an ERA around 4.00 and win 12- 14 games in the #4 slot. Can't complain about that. And ... who knows? Maybe this will be the year he tales a step up. yeah yeah ... we've been waiting for that year from this guy for 5 years now ...

I completely agree with your musings.

You have to wonder about a guy who everyone wants to have but nobody wants to keep. How hard is it to perform with that degree of instability? I have to think he's got a galvanized mindset by now, and won't get flustered like many.

The key is getting guaranteed starts from the guy. You may not like the number of runs he gives up in a game, but he'll at least show up and won't embarass the team. Boston's offense is strong enough to win a couple of his not-so-stellar performances. So like you said, not too shabby for the low end of the rotation.

The thing about Jackson is you never know what you'll get from start to start. Some days he's very good, other days, not so much. But he'll make his starts and give you 100% every time out. As for being moved around, he grew up a military brat, so moving from place to place is nothing new for him. He says it doesn't bother him at all.

This won't end well.

He will get lit up by a good offense...New York, Detroit, Tampa...but will shine against KC and Seattle.

You know at some point and time they will. It's in their DNA.

Historically he's 7-3 against TB and Detroit combined, with a decent ERA and AVG against. Not so well against Boston or NYY, but then he doesn't have to worry about pitching against Boston.

He'll be better than Lackey or Dice-K were last year before the both of them imploded.

They already have a large payroll, and a mostly good team. They don't need to make big moves, and they don't want to. Methinks they're saving up for a better crop of players next year.

A UCL injury is harsh.

The team imploded. The team imploded largely because of three (3) pitchers who disappeared from the staff - two of them starters.

It is what it is.

It will improve from last season.
