Texas had at least 100 million reasons to extend Brown

08:18 AM ET 01.30 | Given the return on its investment, it's no wonder Mack Brown isn't headed anywhere soon. [Brown's] worth every penny of his new nine-year contract, paying him $5.3 million next season. Texas could legitimately pay Mack twice that, given its profit margin. Forget for a second his 13-12 record the past two years, and that he's won only two Big 12 football titles. As a business decision, his contract extension last week underscored the financial godsend that Brown has been in his 14 seasons. Texas grossed in excess of $100 million this past season, again a national best, after bringing in $94 million in the 5-7 season in 2010, $69 million of which was profit.

Let me see if I've got this right. UTx is saying, "We're willing to pay you a lot of money and disregard the won/loss record as long as you bring in $69 million in profit." Right?

Sounds like the CFB version of the Dallas Cowboys.

Just think about the $ they might rake in if they actually won some games!

All the talent in Texas they have to work with and a record of 13-12 the last two years plus getting paid $5.3 million-is this a great country or what?

Wow, what an amazing stat. W/ all the population and talent in Texas and only 13 wins in the last 2 yrs? Who would have thunk it.........

Little poor, unpopulated Arky has 21 wins in the last 2 yrs....in a MUCH harder conference!!

(stir, stir..................)

Texas is living in the past, this cracks me up. 100 Mil for a 13-12 coach you can't make this up.

zing!

UT may have the 2 most overrated coaches in the NCAA...Mackie "Roscoe P Coletrain" Brown and Ricky Poo Barnes. Keep paying them well over their worth. We love beating them on the gridiron and hardwood.

-Signed Big 12

P.S. That LHN must be awesome for recruits. Now all 14 people can see replays of loss after loss after loss...

January 30, 2012  09:36 AM ET

Oh and there were maybe 100 UT fans at the Baylor-UT basketball game on Saturday. Over 10,000 at the Ferrell Center but only 1% wearing the burnt orange. The Wal-Mart fans must not be so eager to purchase their favorite longhorn gear...and it couldn't happen to a better group.

Can we kick them out of the Big 12? They suck.

1.) Muschamp did the right thing

2.) Takes a lot of money to feed that ever expanding waistline

Wow, looked at in those terms makes it look pretty bad.

Bohls is an idiot and an ****-hole, who loves to throw out incendiary crap like this just to stir the pot. I have no effin' clue why the Statesman keeps him on staff. We ain't Notre Dame. There's no intrinsic religious fervor among 'Horns fans. Their brand is all about winning, and Mack has historically done that. The expectation is that he will do so again, that 2010 was an aberration and that 2011 was "rebuilding" (over half of the 2-deep rotation was comprised of freshmen and sophomores). Two more 5-loss seasons, his **** (and considerable belly - switch to salads, Mack!) will be gone. Two more 5-loss seasons, revenues will drop by at least a third.Bottom line................. SHUT THE **** UP AND GO WIN MORE EFFIN' GAMES !!!!!

Glad to see you JRM. You still only occasional or back?

January 30, 2012  09:49 AM ET

If Mack is worth that then what is Saban worth?

Yes, its sucked the last 2 years, but the previous 2 of 25-2 give you at least 3 years to correct it.

The extension is just paperwork to get rid of the negative recruiting.
