'Gutting roster' on table in Columbus

08:34 AM ET 01.31 | Significant changes may be in store for Columbus over the next few weeks. The Blue Jackets are one club that bears watching over the next four weeks, leading up to the NHL???s trade deadline on Feb. 27, when a flurry of trades could dramatically change the roster. Even after the deadline, the Blue Jackets are a compelling bunch, if only to see how they plan to move forward. ... Owner John P. McConnell last week didn???t sound entirely against the idea of gutting the roster and embarking on a rebuilding plan that could take two, three or four years. "I cringe less now than I did two months ago," he said. Asked if that direction would need to be committed to before Feb. 27, McConnell said, "Probably, yes."

WHAT?!?!?! Another grand experiment (a pro team in a decidely college town. Even as a Michigan fan, I respect THE Ohio State University's ownership of this town) by Bettman is crashing down?
I am shocked

Here's a change of pace that our friends in Western Canada may like:

What? Gutting the Blue Jackets? There's nothing to gut! They were eviscerated by Dug McLean from 1998 to 2007. By the time he was done gutting them, they had no entrails left, except for a chunk of colon and the appendix.

can it accurately be called a rebuild if it never was built ?

It's like refinishing a table....wouldn't you first have to restart it?

No it can't. This is more like trying to piece together your own version of Frankenstein.

Maybe if you build it, they will come.

One extra 'O' and we would have had to call the ASPCA.

January 31, 2012  10:41 AM ET

They should start with a new GM before they do anything else! Why would you let the guy who screwed up the drafts and the trades for the last few years to put the Blue Jackets in this spot make the trades for their future?

Very incisive comment Shiprock! You should be responsible for putting the threads together. They are sooo scintillating this morning I'm going to sign off now and go read the phone book to stop my heart from racing.

Would "Gutting the Colonbus" rise to the same level?

Nah! Not even close! Ship wins! Hands down!

Agreed about McLean, a complete waste of space as evidenced by his total lack of support for Nash in terms of getting better teammates for him. When the owner admits he is prepared for 2-5 year rebuild the fans can prepare for tremendous sucking sound from the rink. Watch those season ticket numbers drop!

Thanks Phantom. I really enjoyed this. It is amazing the number of FN or NA as you call them athletes that have played in the NHL, often from impovrished backgrounds. RL should be reconsidered for the HoF. Hopefully this grass roots push might help.

The link didn't work but by going to the above address then looking under columnists for Phil Sheridan you can find the column.

That was good. I always assumed Leach was a HOF member, he sure had the skill to be there. I remember watching he and Bobby Clark when they played for the Flin Flon Bombers, and come to Edmonton and beat up on the Oil Kings. The Bombers played the same style as did the old Flyer teams only difference was the junior Bombers were bigger and meaner. I have always been a big fan of Leach and it was great seeing him at the Alumni Game. He should be in the Hall and hopefully he gets there soon.
