Varlamov looking like Budaj -- in a bad way

08:42 AM ET 02.01 | There were nights, it seemed, when Peter Budaj just couldn't do quite enough for the Avs. [Tuesday night's] goaltending performance by Semyon Varlamov reminded me a lot of [Budaj's] years with the Avalanche. In a game the team really needed to win, the goaltender -- Budaj then, Varlamov [Tuesday] -- couldn't make a big save when it counted. As a result, the Avs came out of a game just like in so many with Budaj -- "tough luck" losers. But a loser, regardless. Varlamov was not the only reason the Avs lost tonight to the Edmonton Oilers ... but he was the biggest reason why. The soft goal allowed to Taylor Hall in the third period was the killer, the goal that put the Oilers up 3-1.

This really surprises me. Varlamov was very good with the Caps and carried the Hershey Bears for a while in the AHL. Maybe that's the problem. The Avs need to stay away from former Hershey goaltenders.

And just to make Avs fans feel worse....

I heard on sports radio yesterday that the Cannots are committed now to keeping both Goalies-errrrrrr sorry 1 Goalie and 1 Loubot. No chance Schneider signs for a home team discount , so how could that be cap possible?

Is this post a reminder that NHL hockey is still played out in Denver?

Varlamov never impressed me, even when he beat The NYR in the playoffs.
he was very lucky I think.

We need 5 reminders a week, according to the FN braintrust.

It's the implied balance in the universe. Varlamov goes east to west and doesn't play as well. Bryzgalov goes west to east and doesn't play as well. Order is maintained and we can all rest comfortable that nothing is out of whack.

Apparently he hasn't impressed the interns, either. They can't get a picture of him to go with the article.

Gotta keep "the Force" in balance.

Each team in the should have their chance at an iffy Slavic goalie. Oh for the days of Tretiak.

I always liked him. He was bedeviled with nagging, mostly minor injuries after his first year. Personally I think he'll be fine in the long run. I agree with you that he had some luck in that Ranger playoff series, but who doesn't on a shot here or there when they win in the playoffs. Frankly, with the exception of the odd game or series here and there most goalies need some help to win consistently. Hockey is still a team game. I remember in the bad old days with the Caps Mike Palmateer was playing goal and we lost (I forget to who) and he gave up 10 goals. After the game Mike said something like "good thing I was sharp or it would really have gotten ugly". Awful thing about it was that it was true!
