Yankees keep Chavez, Damon waiting

08:16 AM ET 02.03 | With a handful of options on the board, the Yankees may turn to Eric Chavez. [Chavez] could still become a Yankee, GM Brian Cashman said. With a little more than two weeks left, Cashman may still add Chavez as the team's backup infielder with a chance to DH a good amount. If Chavez didn't get hurt last year, he was on the verge of taking even more of Jorge Posada's at-bats away. Chavez, who thought about retiring, liked his time last year with the Yankees. The Yankees also can't be entirely ruled out for the free agent DHs with Johnny Damon being especially intriguing. As we reported here last month, if the Yankees do sign one, it will be late and at their price.

Cash, what's the market for AJ's services? We need starting pitcher like a fish needs water.

NYY look very different this offseason. It's kind of strange.

The Yankees are another team that at the moment are going to play with what they have. I don't see any big changes unless someone gets hurt in spring training.

They must have something up their sleeve. Probably waiting for next offseason. A few good guys will be available. Hammels for example.

In the past the big spenders didn't care about the luxury tax but for some reason it seems to be a big deal to them now so you're not going to see them make moves unless they really have to. It's not like the Yankees don't have a pretty solid team as it is.

Luxury tax rules just changed with the last CBA. It's going up to 42% in 2012 and then 50% in 2013.

They already got Kuroda and Pineiro. That's change enough for a team which had the best record last year. They don't need talent as much as they need to learn how to play the game when it counts.

It's amazing how many times you have to remind people about this rule change. The other change is that your rate gets completely reset if you go under the limit just one year. It's a big reason why the Bronx and Beantown have been shopping carefully this offseason. Better talent is coming next year.

The limit stays at $178 million through the 2013 season, then rises to $189 million for the three seasons after that.

Chavez has value and can help them. Damon? not really. Still no DH on the whole bloody team.

I think on the one hand it would be kind of fun to have Damon back but I also like Chavez as a backup to A-Rod and he'd also be ok as a part time DH. I'm not concerned too much about who we get to accompany Andruw Jones at DH. It's going to end up DH by committee anyway.

Derek Jeter. They will use him at DH this year. Let the kid Nunez play some more. His legs are younger and he has better range.

Yeah, and he fields like Knoblauch.
