08:17 AM ET 02.03 | What's left for Roy Oswalt? A baseball source said that the Rangers are not likely to sign [Oswalt], who informed them earlier this week that he doesn't want to pitch in relief. The source said that the Rangers don't want to remove Matt Harrison from the starting rotation to make room for Oswalt, a three-time All-Star with Houston who has ties to team president Nolan Ryan, bench coach Jackie Moore and pitching coach Mike Maddux when they worked in the Astros organization. Oswalt reportedly is seeking a one-year deal for $10 million from the Rangers and St. Louis. The Rangers viewed him as a key piece of depth who could fill in should a starter be injured or need to be skipped for extra rest.

I'm surprised the Nats went with Jackson and not Oswalt. He would have been a great mentor to Zimmerman and Straus even if for just a year.

@MacMucci - Interesting thought. I'm thinking they wanted innings over knowledge, and that's what Jackson gives them. Oswalt is a gamble. And you can buy mentors without them occupying a space on the roster.

I like Roy a lot and I hope things work out for him somewhere in the capacity that he wants but I think he's going to have to make some changes in his expectations. This point in his career, back issues, I think when you look at recent history teams are a little wary of signing him for that kind of bread.

would love to see Royals work out something for him. He would be perfect fit and give youngsters another year to develop. Great upside if be persuaded by a package deal.

Why exactly does Oswalt think he deserves $10 mill for one year and is demanding to be a starter? He wasn't very good at all last year, and his career is really going downhill pretty quickly. He's aging. He needs to realize he's not the Roy Oswalt of old and come to terms with it, and eventually accept a reasonable contract figure and be open to at least the POSSIBILITY of pitching in relief.

what team would be paying 10 millions for a long reliver and or ocacionally starter???, i mean we know the rangers have the financially flexibility, but why they don't want to give him a starter spot??oh yeah Oswalt tends to get injuried from time to time!!!

it would be more easy for boston to sign kazmir than Oswalt, kazmir for one minor league deal!!

Any team that offers Oswalt a contract that is not largely incentive based is crazy. There are good reasons Philly had zero interest in bringing him back at any price.

MLB team would do that if they could, but players just don't take those contracts unless they have to.
