Nats aggressively shopping Lannan

08:18 AM ET 02.03 | Washington, apparently, is still not satisfied with its arms. [The Nationals], even after acquiring left-hander Gio Gonzalez and signing him to a five-year, $42 million extension, are not done adjusting their starting rotation. The team has reached agreement with free-agent right-hander Edwin Jackson and is aggressively shopping left-hander John Lannan, major-league sources say. ... Lannan, 27, lost his arbitration case with the Nationals but became the team's highest-paid pitcher for 2012 on Thursday, receiving $5 million. He had asked for $5.7 million after earning $2.75 million last season. If the Nationals traded Lannan ... they still would have one left-hander in their rotation, Gonzalez, and possibly a second, Ross Detwiler.

Not a great pitcher, not a terrible pitcher. He'd fit nicely as a #4 or #5 starter for some club. Just sayin...

i think what the nationals actually would like to do, its to trade lannan for a minor prospect but to make the other team pay the 5 millions for lannan contract!!!

February 3, 2012  11:58 AM ET

why the nationals are refusing to keep lannan?? is it because of the amount of money they have to pay to the pitcher?? and how secure its the nationals rotation?? its washington intouchable from any injuries in the near future?? i mean you as a GM, you should be well aware that the pitcher depth its never enough!!!

I agree with alacran -- Rule 1. you never, never, never, never have enough pitching. Rule 2: If you think you have enough pitching, see Rule 1.

Really? Dump a 27 yr. old lefty starter w/#4 or #5 potential who's locked in @5mill next season. They don't impress me as being that stupid. Relatively speaking, this guy sounds like a bargain.Look what the Angels just paid for their new lefty starter w/ #3 potential.

February 3, 2012  05:54 PM ET

i think the nationals are thinking backwards, the franchise should just keep lannan who knows what lannan can do this year for the team!!!

the Angels

this team have being lacking in lefty starters, pitchers for more than ten years, the last time this franchise did have a solid lefties was, when finley, and mark langston, back in 1995, this year they only have one lefty but they could had have two only if the team had signed buehrle!!!

February 3, 2012  07:44 PM ET

it seems the rays are thinking the samething as the nationals, excess in pitching? what? how? and why? i wonder who told this excecutives that pitching its a excessive amount?? pitching, pitching, pitching, would be, should be and must be, at top priority for every team!!!

Nats GM Rizzo has stated that they're open to trades that upgrade a position of need--mainly CF and SS. Signing Edwin Jackson means that they now have 7 major league SP. They can stash one of them in the bullpen and maybe send Lannan to the minors but at some point, the best use of your pitching is as trade bait to upgrade the offense. This is not about Lannan's salary--the Lerner's can plenty afford his $5mm--if the Nats trade Lannan or Detwiller, it will likely be for an upgrade in the lineup.
