Meyer already running afoul of Big Ten?

08:21 AM ET 02.03 | Earlier this week, it was Michigan State taking some offense to Urban Meyer's recruiting tactics, and now this. After 60-plus days on the job at Ohio State, there's no avoiding it. Either the Big Ten bows to Urban Meyer, or Urban Meyer bows to the Big Ten. "I can tell you this," says Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema. "We at the Big Ten don't want to be like the SEC -- in any way, shape or form." ... [Meyer] already is getting under the skin of his colleagues. Just how much, you ask? Bielema, whose teams have won more games than any other Big Ten team in his six seasons in Madison, says Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez will speak Friday with Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer's recruiting methods.

If first you don't succeed, go to the teacher and tattle!

I don't know what Barry is going to say, Urban just asked if they were interested in Ohio State and if they said No he ended the conversation. Sounds like if you lost your recruit they were never yours to begin with.

You play to win... That is why you run up the score on every one when you have the chance.

Big Ten- Extra Practice and Free Tats

February 3, 2012  08:50 AM ET

Oh hell. Only hire coaches from within the Big10 family that play nice with each other? Incest anyone?

You have to admit, Meyer isn't exactly classing up the big ten. Reminds me of RichRod. Meyer is standing on the corner in a wizard hat selling snake oil.

"We at the Big Ten don't want to be like the SEC -- in any way, shape or form."

Seems like the Big 10 wants to go back to "the good old days" where the only major out-of-conference games are with the Pac-12 (or Notre Dame), with their implied collective superiority (not just on the football field).

Just imagine what would have happened if a Big 10 team hired Lane Kiffen. Talk about culture shock!

Depends on the school he was hired at, he did not do the same things at USC that he did at UTk.

I'm sure other coaches had no problem mentioning OSU's problems to recruits such as how they would not be playing in a bowl game next year. These kids probably did not want to play for coach field goal, but Meyer is a different story. Stop crying coaches, besides there can't be a gentleman's agreement when gentleman are in very short supply in this profession.

Sounds like Urban has been ruffling some feathers.

So I guess you don't want to be a part of dominating the national championships for the past 10 years???? Maybe you want to be a little like them!

It seems like Bielema is attempting to counter the Meyer momentum. Of course the Big Ten wants to win and grab top recruits. He got a DB and WR from Florida, a QB from California. Of course the Big Ten wants to beat the SEC.

So what does he gain by this statement? He paints Meyer as a slimeball - to help his own recruiting. (UW had a really small class this year).

Meyer has shown at every program that he can come in and make a recruiting impact immediately. He has not shown the ability to sustain a program long-term. Coaches will attack that. All is fair until the LOI is signed.

He probably would prefer to be like the Big 10 was during the Bo and Woody era.

Sounds to me like Bielema just got served and he doesn't like it. I'm not a big fan of Metyer, but Bielema is a joke if he doesn't want us to believe "Big Boy recruiting" hasn't been going on in the Big 10 before this.

The fact of the matter PROBABLY is that a lot of these guys wanted to go to Ohio State and didn't because of their issues. Now that the issues are cleared up mostly and they have a successful coach, the guys predisposed to Ohio State are coming in.

In the body of the article, there's this quote:

During his National Signing Day press conference, Bielema hinted that Meyer was using ???illegal??? recruiting practices. He said as much again Thursday when contacted by Sporting News, and without getting into specifics offered this:

???I called Urban and we spoke about it,??? Bielema said. ???We talked about it, and he said it would stop and it did. I???ll let our commissioner deal with anything else. That???s not who we are (in the Big Ten). We settle things among ourselves as coaches.???

I wonder just what were the "illegal" practices?

No need at USCw... No need to go "Hollywood" when it is right down the road.
