Finley wants WR contract from Packers

07:55 AM ET 02.04 | Jermichael Finley is a free agent this off-season and there hasn't been any movement on a new contract. "Hey, it's the NFL," Finley said. "With business right now, I don't even know what's going on. ...You just have to play that (waiting) game. It's the Green Bay way. "I don't know anything. I'll just hope for the best." If Finley does receive the franchise tag from the Packers, it's expected that he will seek to be classified as a wide receiver. An arbitrator would make that final call. The franchise tag number for wideouts will likely be around $9 million.

If the greed hits Green Bay hard, this could be the end of those big numbers for Rodgers.

Classified as a WR? Don't WR's generally CATCH more than they drop?

I suppose any TE that does not block much for the running game could be considered a WR. Sure, go ask.

Since he drops so many passes, I guess it would be OK to pay him as a mediocre WR.

If he's got Aaron Rodgers throwing to him and he still has a lot of drops, he should hope that Green Bay keeps him around, period. He won't get nearly as much money if he hits FA.

Unfortunately the coach thinks highly of this guy and envisions him being like he was in his first year. Ain't happening. I've seen this before with tight ends, get the big hit big time injury and they hear footsteps coming up and concertrate of protecting themselves first, catching the ball second.
Looking at his drop they all were the same, right in the hands but the mind wasn't there.
If they dump this sucker they come out way ahead. Can't coach stupid, can't coach unrealibility. They costs you super bowl chances.

Finley will get offered what he's worth, not what he thinks he's worth. He'll perceive it as an insult and walk. Some team that doesn't understand football with sign him for way more than he deserves and then will look at each other quizzically when they find out Finley is an average tight end. They'll then remember that the Packers won the SB without him. GB will promote one of their existing tight ends to starter and he'll be twice as good as Finley at half the price.

Not so sure about that.
The cost for putting the franchise tag on a TE is only $5.4 million.
That is what scares Finley. He knows he can get more in FA, and that a team can tag a player two years in a row.....
I think they tag him....

Hmmm? tag and trade? or just tag and tag....

Note: Trading franchised players is prohibited. BUT, you can tag a guy and then work out a contract deal with another team and then trade him........has happened before.
But the player has to be willing to go along with it all or you have to keep him and all the money is guaranteed.

This can't be said enough: WRs catch the ball!

Bottom line is that Finley is getting tagged. I agree with all of the comments regarding the unrealistic expectations of a TE who can't catch precise, tight spirals that either hit him between the 8's or right in the face mask. If Quarless doesn't get hurt, there's a better chance of the packers letting Finley walk. But 88 still commands a double-team, and so does Jennings, which is the real secret sauce for that offense. Along with having #12. So he'll get the tag and the pack can evaluate him for $5.4M next year. This next one is a make-or-break year for Finley if he thinks he is worth Witten/Gonzo/Gates money. Dude needs to shut up and catch the ball.

Uhhh, Roy Williams and TO come to mind right away. I'm sure Finley would love to get paid like either one of them.
