08:07 AM ET 02.06 | Documents released by the city reportedly suggest a far more progress in returning the NBA to Seattle than previously known. A wealthy San Francisco hedge-fund manager and officials in the Seattle mayor's office have been working behind the scenes for eight months to bring an NBA team back to the city as early as next fall and build a new arena, according to emails and documents that reveal a far more concerted effort than previously known. A Dec. 13 agenda for a meeting between the parties shows they were talking about details such as a "Review of Basic Deal Structure," "Financing Issues," including "City Debt Capacity," and "Security for Public Financing."

Should have never left... Too bad it took the Sonics leaving for that to be realized.

Exactly.
No offense to Oklahoma City... but, how can there be an NBA team in that city and not Seattle?

Cause the people of Seattle didn't want to build an arena
And the owner didn't want to pay for it out of his pocket

Because Seattle effed up. They didn't care when the Sonics was there. They care now because they miss the NBA! They wanted a new arena but they said no even after the Seahawks and Mariners got their new facilities!

Greed.

The answer was "no" because Seattle residents were already taxed HEAVILY for SafeCo and Qwest fields built for the Mariners and Seahawks.
People in Washington were not excited to have more tax dollars being charged to their incomes for another sports stadium, and they were reasonable with that assertion.
It's the greed of owners in general, and Clay Bennett in this case, that creates these situations.
Bennett is worth $400 million but feels comfortable asking for a new stadium and having local taxpayers foot the bill.
The epitome of greed.

Correct... with a rich history of success for the Sonics as well.

Seattle is just the latest city to lose an NBA franchise. New Orleans and Charlotte both lost teams before they gained another. Look at Minneapolis. It took almost 30 years for the city to get the Timberwolves after they lost the Lakers.
If there is a business case for a team in Seattle they will get one. If not, they will just have to travel to Portland and watch the Trailblazers.

You're right.
Also, look at places like Kansas City and Baltimore... even Buffalo.
Lots of franchies have come and gone to cities over the years.

Seattle has no one to blame but themselves. Don't blame OKC for jumping at the opportunity to gain an NBA team after hurricane Katrina relocated NO to OKC and NBA fever took hold. The difference between the two cities and new arenas is that the cost of living in Oklahoma is a whole lot cheaper than the cost of living in Seattle. The cost of building a new arena in OKC is WAY cheaper than doing the same thing in Seattle.

Bennett had ZERO intent of keeping the Sonics in Seattle. Anyone believing that is delusional.
He wanted a team in OKC... he got a team in OKC.

Agreed, no more new teams. We have already few teams that should never existed in the first place.
I wish the NBA was 22 teams max. It would be way more exciting to watch.
