Yankees closing on Ibanez

08:16 AM ET 02.07 | One does not hear every day that the Yankees are seeking the cheapest alternative. The Yankees appear to be zeroing in on Raul Ibanez as the extra bat that Joe Girardi was pitching for last week. The Yankees are seeking a left-handed hitter and other possibilities have included Eric Chavez and ex-Yankees Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon. But Ibanez appears to be their best option for an outfielder because he could occasionally play left field and the Yanks are unsure if Matsui or Damon can, according to sources. ... The Yankees would like to keep expenses on their final winter piece as low as possible, so whoever comes cheapest could get the roster spot, too.

Isn't Seattle starting earlier than the other teams? I thought I heard it was 6 days for them.

That is music to my ears. The only good news from the Superbowl is that I had the final score in a square pool and won $100.

The press is being super tough on Brady.

The press is required to file stories. Now they can write a story about how great Tom Brady is as a QB and how he almost won another SB. Or they can get on his wife about how she was throwing people under the bus. How Tom is getting too old, etc.

Which story would you like to read about. It is always easier to go negative. Sort of like the politicans. They can tell people how they are going to cut the deficit and put thousands of federal employees on the unemployment line, or they can bash their opponents and do nothing. Which one is easier.

I know what you mean. I just think that the "Brady failing" is stealling the "Eli came thru" headlines. But like you said the negative sells more papers.

I suppose if the choice is between Damon, Matsui and Ibanez, Ibanez is the best choice as far as fielding ability goes. Might as well.

With the short porch in right they should go with the power. Who has better power numbers, Matsui or Ibanez?

You don't sign any of those 3 if you need them to play defense. They DH and pinch hit. Of the 3, I'll take Damon. He still runs well and holds his own against lefties when he has to. Pornoman can't run and hit fewer dingers than Damon did and Ibanez can't run and his ability to hit lefties has dropped off sharply.

Damon. He his 16 last year, same as Ibanez and more than Matsui.

Agreed, among those 3, Damon clearly has the most left in the tank. Although he will also be the most expensive.
